I recently received from my lovely wife, Sheslinger, a brand new JLD Enterprises PTR-91KP for our anniversary. I finally, after 14 days of ownership, got to take it to the range and run it through it's paces. So without further adeau the range report.

The Gun.
The gun is a JLD Enterprises HK 91 clone known as the PTR-91 for precision target rifle. The model I have is the PTR-91KP for Kurz Paratrooper. Kurz means short and is in relation to the short 16 inch barrel. The paratrooper designation is in regards to the fact that this firearm has a collapseable stock.

The furniture is olive drab in color and the gun came with two aluminum HK 20 round magazines, hardcase, trigger lock and manual.

The trigger pack on my firearm is metal. Some newer PTR-91s have a plastic trigger pack.

Fit and Finish
I have held and shot many real HK 91s and this gun has better fit and finish then any of the true HKs I have handled. It is tighter and the welds are incredibly well done. The olive drab forearm and pistol grip contrast nicely with the rest of the rifle.

After 140 rounds the finish shows no wear and tear at all even around the ejection port. It is evenly applied and the only blemish is on the collapseable stock where it rubs the receiver.

Basic Operation
HK 91s are not small hand friendly so I have to shift my little girly hands to manipulate the safety and I have to use the pinky or other finger of the same hand I am pulling the magazine out with to work the magazine release button at the same time. This sounds more difficult/uncomfortable then it really is.

I have always liked the HK forward cocking handle and this one is very nicely done and works very well. The actual handle is an upgrade from the ones I remember on HK91s.

The collapseable stocks works simply and smoothly. It looks very uncomfortable and is a bit uncomfortable when dry firing or just handling. Under actual shooting a good cheekweld is actually very easy to find and the recoil is not uncomfortable at all. I actually don't feel any of the recoil transmitted through the buttstock.

Sights
The sights are excellent. They are standard HK diopter style with the exception that the 100 yard setting is an actual peep instead of the HK V notch. I like the JLD peep better. Adjusting them requires tools though and that I do not like.

Trigger
The trigger is a very heavy combat trigger. I believe it is a two stage and it breaks very nicely but it is very very heavy. The feel of the trigger on my finger is very nice though.

So lets do some shooting shall we.
I managed to run around 140 rounds of surplus 7.62x51 through the gun. First and foremost to test for reliability and rest assured that it was as reliable as any HK/AK or FAL I have ever shot. It never missed a beat and threw brass forward and to the right with what we shall call "vigor". Read that as you wouldn't want to get hit with on of these pieces of brass. Glad I'm not a left hander, :neener: :D Sorry, I couldn't resist Jeep.

The gun itself was shooting about five inches left and very high initially. I was able to adjust the windage very easily but my needle nose pliars were too big to adjust for bullet drop. So it was Kentucky or in this case Tennessee guess as far as this was concerned from this point on.

Once I figured out the bullet drop/or rise in this case I was able to very easily and quickly put rounds into a black shoot and see at 50 yards. At 100 yards it was more of the same, easy to put rounds in the black and I managed one very good group even having to aim low. All in all the gun itself seems more then accurate enough.

Recoil
Now I will be honest I was a bit worried about recoil due to the stock, roller locking mechanism and short barrel with only a flash hider. Boy was I surprised to find that the recoil although stout enough to cause a sight picture loss was not punishing to the shooter at all. I felt almost no recoil get transmitted back to my shoulder I don't know how they did it but this thing is softer shooting then some of the full size HKs I have shot. Big thumbs up here.

Field Stripping and Cleaning
Typical HK here, very easy, very quick no tools needed.........unless you disassemble te bolt. I had never disassembed an HK bold assembly before and this may very well be the last time. The friggen thing was a bear to put back on. :cuss: Other than that field stripping is as straight forward and easy as any combat rifle should be.

Final Ratings (out of 5 rounds)

Fit and Finish 5 ROUNDS - Better than any real honest to by God HK I have seen.

Reliability 5 ROUNDS - vigorous extraction, no problems what-so-ever.

Trigger 2 ROUNDS - very clean break but HEAVY with a capital H.

Sights 4 ROUNDS - I like diopter sights very much and these work well. It just loses one round due to needing tools to adjust.

Magazines - 3 ROUNDS Aluminum 5 ROUNDS Steel - The aluminium magazines work extremely well but seem flimsy. The steel magazines work 100% as well but are built like tanks. I prefer the steel. That opinion might be different if I had to carry them into combat though.

Recoil Management - 5 ROUNDS imparted very little perceived recoil into my shoulder. Stout enough to cause sight picture to be lost but soft feeling to the max. I am amazed actually.

Value - 4 ROUNDS. $1200 is $1200 bucks and it ain't cheap but everything about this rifle oozes quality and when you consider the cost of things like HK collapseable stocks etc. this gun is a good value especially compared to real HK91s. This gun is easy the equal of our Springfield M1A.

Accuracy - 4 ROUNDS too early to really tell since I don't have her completely sighted in but I was able to pull off a spectacular group with iron sights at 100 yards and I am no marksman with iron sights at 100 yards. So I believe that this rifle is "mechanically" very very accurate. I have some Black Hills 168 grain match that will get tried as soon as I get it sighted in perfectly.

Overall - 4 ROUNDS definitely a solid rifle all around. About the only thing that could make it a bit better would be a little lighter weight, and sights that adjust without tools. After shooting this model I feel the standard PTR-91 that frequently sells for around $700 is a true bargain of a rifle.

A couple pictures since this thread is, of course, useless without pictures. :D

Target, consider thyself thoroughly hosed. :) (man, I gotta get one of those).

Thank you sir for that fine review. One question, where did she purchase it from and did they have it in stock or did she have to backorder it?

Was purchased from the Reloaders Bench in Mt. Juliet, TN. They had it on order for about a year and she just happened upon it.

Cool, thanks for the write-up. I am dying to get a PTR-91 myself. Hopefully I will be able to.

Definitely on my short list, if I ever dig myself out of debt.

The ergonomics of the para stock comes as welcome info. It looks like about the most uncomfortable of all the folding/collapsible stocks I've seen (except maybe the Romanian wire stock :p), and poor shootability kills whatever other functionality a para stock offers.

Maybe I should just para-ize my FAL and hacksaw the barrel...

Not jealous. Just envious. :D

Go over to either H-K 91 site or the CETME rifle site and go to the tech section and there should be a thread on dis-reassembly of the bolt. The CETME site thread said to use the canvas sling as a strap wrench to help reassembly, i went out and bought a small strap wrench to use. I have a CETME rifle and yes it is not fun to put the bolt back together :banghead: :cuss:

I took my PTR-91 to the range this morning. Shooting off a rest using the stock iron sights and Portuguese Milsurp ammo, I got consistent 2-1/2" groups at 100 yards. Next on my list is a trigger job, as the trigger was just brutally heavy and gritty. I always knew the trigger was bad, but it never felt so bad before. Shooting off the bench will really make you appreciate a good trigger, and hate a bad one. I think that with a better trigger, it would easily be a 2 MOA rifle with milsurp. It's anybody's guess what it would do with the trigger job and match grade ammo, but I don't think that 1 MOA is out of the question. I intend to find out.

Incidentally, questions sometimes come up about ejection patterns with these rifles. Mine was consistently throwing the brass forward -- about the 1:00 position. It was hitting a 4x4 post (supporting the roof over the firing line) and ricocheting forward and to the left. About 90% of the brass wound up about 20 yards away at 10-11:00 of the shooting position. Without the post in the way, it would have been 20-25 yards out at 1-2:00.

That makes it difficult to recover brass, but these rifles beat the brass up so badly that there is no point in recovering it, anyway.

I really enjoy shooting my standard PTR-91.
The flash hider is a must on either rifle in my opinion.
I have fired a full size rifle without the flash hider and the difference is noticable to both the shooter and anybody standing nearby, I can imagine the short rifle is even more dramatic.

When I first saw the K rifle I was not impressed but the more of these I see the more I am getting the urge to add one as a companion to my full size rifle.
The 'Bush' rifle version of a G3,,,,,,

Glad you are as impressed with your new rifle as I have been with mine.

the south african ammo pictured isn;t reloadable anyways

but I soooooooo want one of those, as soon as I make it out of NY it's first on my list.

There is a fellow that hangs out at www.cetmerifles.com, named Bill Springfield, who does trigger jobs on CETMEs at a very reasonable rate. He has a good rep. on that forum. He can probably help your trigger out.
