Fair Price for Once-Used Brass

One of the unintentionally-funniest things I ever saw online was a guy trying (and failing) to sell 10mm range pickups at X per case, when starline was selling at maybe 70% of X. Another poster pointed this out, and the seller indignantly responded that this was "top quality factory ammo brass, not Starline." He did not complete a sale.

I was buying range 45acp from a guy a few years back that was darn near 10% starline. Must have been some Rich reloader at his range.
Love me some starline, but I’ll reload those aluminum blazer cases too. I can’t find the cheap bastard emoji.

There's a fair sized commercial loader/reloader operation near me (Georgia Arms) that at least used to load all of their new-manufacture ammo in starline cases. There are probably others who do the same. You may be seeing the brass left by non-reloaders who bought small factory/commercial ammo that uses Starline headstamp brass.

I've picked up untold thousands of 9mm range brass and only found a few Starline cases. It's a rare thing at most ranges.

I compare to new Starline brass to assess the value of alternatives. I've got a fair quantity of once-fired 45LC that I've decapped and tumbled, but even so it's only worth 15 cents max because of the $21/100 price mentioned in this thread for Starline. Not even cleaned it's 10 cents tops.

Of course! I pick up every Starline I reload. Generally lose only one or two a night.

They reload consistently well.

I recently bought some Starline .357 magnum for 18 cents apiece because I never find more than few pieces. I like it well enough, but like the RP stuff I occasionally find just as well. A few weeks ago I bought 600 new PPU 38 special for less than 9 cents apiece from Graf's on closeout, and like it too.

These days I don't use anything 9mm that didn't come from the range in the first place, and is thus easily replaced. I've got large working populations of WIN, Blazer, .FC., and RP. All work great separated and loaded as lots, but the QC (or lack thereof) on WIN results in some culling. With some effort I'll still lose more than a few if I'm firing full-power ammunition, so I save the Starline for the revolver.

So most guys pay me for the opportunity to ship me brass. So if you would like I can send you my address then send me your colt brass and .25 cents per case you send.
That' My final offer.

Same here, and have so much I can sort by head stamp if I want to. Same for .45 ACP and .40. .38 Spl is the next closest in quantity found.

I find some 38 special, but never more than a box or two at a time. When I take my GP100 to my favorite outdoor range everybody else there is intrigued - only us old guys have revolvers. It's only the ladies qualifying for their permits that shoot .38s there, and they don't shoot many rounds.

Recently I ran into a guy and his college-age son home for the holidays. They were sporting clays guys who had just bought their first handgun, and unusually it was a revolver (Single Six). I let them shoot my GP with H110 loads and the kid's eyes are probably still big as saucer plates. That's one young shooter that is a big revolver fan now.

The whole idea of the OP is predicated on saving up all of his brass and then when he gets say 500 pcs then trying to find a buyer. So Maybe when it's all said and done he recoups 15% of his ammo expenses. If 500 rounds of 45LC factory loads costs $400.00 then he gets back less than $40.00 better than nothing I suppose. But if this were my decision I would shoot 45 acp where the same 500 rounds factory ammo costs around $150.00-$200.00 more than half the cost.

I've purchased once fired brass, picked some up off the ground and saved my factory ammo brass as we all have but I cannot think of a time where I bought any less than 1000 pcs. It certainly is a cost saving possibility but I'm having a difficult time getting excited over the concept. I sort every single pc of range brass I have and odd stuff I put aside in a box designated for that stuff. I had stuck in the back of my mind that I was starting to accumulate a bunch of 38 Super brass which I don't use at all. This from a number of years of collecting. Anyway I wanted to give it to a man that volunteers a lot of personal time to the shooting sports. I had less than 500 pcs, prolly in the 400 pc territory.

I think a better way to offset shooting costs without handloading ammo is to pick up every pc of brass you see on the ground at the range. sort it by caliber and sell mixed headstamp lots. Might be able to get $30.00 per 1000 pcs of 9mm brass, there certainly is a lot of it lying around on the ground. A lot of work picking it up but it's all labor and free.

O worked as an RO at a large falling steel match. A boy in his early teens came through to my stage shooting a factory S&W 929 revolver. This is the same gun I shoot. My stage was the second stage of the match for him in an 8 stage total match. 1/4 of the way through thru the match and that poor kid pulling the 14 pound DAO trigger was literally out of gas. I told him to find me when he was finished shooting, I took him to a practice range and let him shoot my 929 with my reloads and he couldn't believe the difference. So I think we might have saved a budding revolver shooter from discouragement at least I hope so.

I let the young fellow work his way up on the GP100 - first with my mouse-fart loads in 3/4" long 38 special cases, then 38 +P, and then some max 158 gr. H110 fireballs. He rattled off the six H110 loads as fast as he could cock the hammer (didn't know anything about DA), controlled the muzzle rise probably better than I do and kept his shots on the 6" target at about 12 yards. Oh to be young.
