I too bought an Austrian DSA STG58 Para just about a month ago. Yes, the beast is heavy. But it shoots very lightly and the maintenance is easier than cleaning the Mini 14.
The FAL is the first Black rifle and was and is still used by many countries. I have now made it my official favorite black gun over my DPMS AR15 and WASR 10 AK 47.
Being a larger caliber, the ammo is definitely more expensive than the smaller .223. I just purchased 200 rounds of WPA .308 ammo (I know it's not that much) from www.surplusammo.com. With shipping and handling, it came out to 0.58cents/round. Sportsmansguide is even cheaper - they just didn't have any in stock when I ordered mine from surplusammo.
I wouldn't sell the icon.
