The FAL and I have a relationship spanning 55 years.

It all started with the first C1 Rifles issued to Canadian forces in the late '50s, which were very fine rifles. From there it went to Aussie and British L1A1 rifles, also very nice, and thence to a few European FALs of assorted parentage. My current FAL is a DSA SA58, bought new. This totals a dozen or so rifles.....I can truthfully say that ALL of them were (and are) excellent firearms.

Not varminters, not sleek hunting instruments, not super-accurate target machinery..... but if I want a functional and reliable device for putting those .30-caliber bullets downrange in multiples, and CONTINUING to do so regardless of weather or fouling, then my FAL is VERY high on my list.

As for what distinguishes my particular rifle, I have mounted a Bushnell 3200 in a DSA "Extreme" top-cover mount which works very well. AND, if ever an FAL could be described as "pretty", mine has stock, fore-end and pistol grip in very handsome silky-smooth walnut... a VERY handsome rifle, at least to my (prejudiced!) eye

Dont know the legalities of it, but its a very sweet beast.

They do offer some fine weapons...thats a large budget item though, even for a standard rifle.

My go to battle rifle is the good old FAL ! The L1A1 "Sporter" (on an Imbel lower) from CAI 20 years ago was tuned by the "Gun Plumber" 15 years ago and runs well but is 5" accurate at 200 yards with the 4x scope . The Austrian 58 was built by Arizona Response system on a new kit and imbel reciever about 10 years ago and is tuned and I have gotten 3" 200 yard groups with Federal Match ammo with the Sightron S3 1.75-6x scope. It is sweet and old ugly rides on my rigged single point sling well but you would NOT want to try swimming with it around your neck!

For a FAL clone in current production, go with a DSA SA-58 series.

At the 2010 SHOT Show, overheard a some guy talking to FN rep about if FN will ever produce the FAL again. FN rep told him, won't happen and to get a DSA FAL because that's the best available in the US civilian market.

If you can spare it, save some more and get you a Springfield M1A loaded.

Absolutely love my DSA SA-58. Do I love it more than my M1A or PTR91? No, but it's about equal to the point where I have trouble deciding what to take to the range lol.

Same here I have two FALs to my three M1A's. I have one Entreprise Carbine and a heavy barrel DSA.
Imbel and Argentine receivered rifles are good to have too.
