Family Death - Ammo Disposal

Well, it wont take you very long to sell that stuff around here, but I fear you might be in the wrong sub forum. A mod will come along and get you to the right spot though. And sorry to hear about your brother.

Firstly, I would like to apologize for the loss of your brother. Your family is in my prayers, especially around this time of year.

As far as the ammunition.. This is a difficult one. The reason? It appears to be that a good chunk of that ammo is "hand loaded" and not factory. Did your brother keep any notes about the ammo? Perhaps where it came from? Recipes? Etc?

Hand loaded ammo is difficult to sell and honestly should only be sold as "components". Selling hand loaded ammo, especially stuff that you have no idea about, puts you in a risky position.

As far as factory ammo and empty brass, you can look around on here to find what it may be worth, within the classified section. It would also be helpful for us if we new some history, which I'm not being hopeful on since you are new to our sport (Welcome!). Once fired brass is worth more to a lot of us then 2x/3x etc, due to the life expectancy going down. Is there any notes on the brass that y'all found? Or did your brother not reload?

Wont be a problem to sell (especially the 270s I bet). It's an amount that I would want to sell locally, Seems like trouble to package and ship each little bit.

I'm sorry to hear about your brothers passing. It's a hard thing to go through anytime, but this time of year in particular.

I don't know if you found a place for your brothers stuff yet, but I notice you said there were boxes and bags with empty shells. This is a long shot, but I'm going to take it anyway. If there's any 30-40 KRAG brass in the collection I'd like the opportunity to buy it. I own a 30-40 and I'm having a hard time finding empties to reload. Would appreciate a response if and when you find the time. Thank you.

Again, I'm sorry about your loss.

So sorry for your loss.

As for the ammo, based on the fact that you stated he has reloading supplies also, it's highly likely that an unknown amount of that is reloads. That being the case, it would be difficult to find someone willing to buy it for use, other then to pull it apart and reuse some of the components. The most likely solution would be as other's suggested, find some of his friends that knew him, they may be interested in shooting the stock pile of ammo?

The firearms, well Arizona is pretty regulation free in this respect. It would be no problem selling those firearms locally, and with Tucson just a stone throw away, many gun enthusiasts would be wiling to drive to Phoenix.

My condolences.

As for selling ammo, you've gotten some great advice already. I'll put in my 2 cents.

Ammo doesn't "go bad" so to speak if it's stored in dry moderate climates. Folks here are shooting ammo that's 100 years old. The biggest risk is that it's loaded improperly (hand loads), or got wet or subjected to other environmental concerns.

Shipping it will be a major pain in the rear, and cost prohibitive. Don't bother.

It will be super easy to sell locally, and I wouldn't worry about it falling into the "wrong hands" so to speak. Realize that any adult can walk into Walmart and buy ammo in most states. The advice to contact his old shooting buddies is great advice. Otherwise, Armslist or similar sites will make the ammo easy to sell. Find the same factory ammo online, and reduce the price by maybe 20% for cash deals.

You could also trade/barter for things you like, such as motorcycle stuff. Bartering will increase the "value" of what you have in my experience.

You might consider a bill of sale stating that some or all of the ammo may be reloads and you've notified the buyer that it should be used as components only or shot at their own risk. You don't know the history or origin of the ammo.

Take an inventory, yes.

Sell it here NO, you do not yet qualify to sell in the trading post and selling in the forums is a banable offence.

Find a local mentor, gun store, whatever and heed their advice, about gun shows and local sales. we have several AZ members who may respond to your need.

Condolences and good luck.
I believe AZAmmo has accomplished what he has set out to do.....creating interest from potential buyers on this forum.

With the obvious postings of individuals stating they are interested, I'm sure he has received various PMs as well.....

I am also sorry for your loss of a brother .. We all should be better prepared for this kind of thing . I am the gun guy in the family and when I go . My wife has a list of who gets what ,, who should be called upon to help sell whatever she chooses to sell . Here in NC I have two friends that work in gun stores . I know would help price whatever and would sell them for her on Gun Broker or just flat out buy them . Naturaly the friend that helps sell them should get something for the effort .
