Nice! I just got my first flintlock and have put about 20 rounds through it. A couple of days ago, my FIL, who is also pushing 80 but has been hunting for 65 years or so, asked me to let him know next time I'm going to the range. He has never shot a flintlock and wants to! He has shot sabots over Pyrodex pellets from an inline muzzleloader, but never true black. I warned him black powder is addictive.

Thanks for the pics; I'll have to remember to take my camera or shoot some pics with my cell phone when I take my FIL out.

Glad your FIL got the chance to shoot a flintlock! They are habit forming at any age!

I've always been fascinated by the surprisingly distinctive three-stage firing process of flintlock weapons:

Stage One: Click - the flint strikes the frizzen.

Stage Two: Fizz - the powder in the frizzen pan ignites.

Stage Three: Boom - the main powder charge explodes.

Very cool process!

Very cool,

What state are you in? Reminds me of home back in Northern Michigan. I dont get to see greenery like that out here in New Mexico very often.

Norton, the 3 stages are what happens when all goes well, but on some occasions, like when a nice buck is broadside within range, and it goes; click, pfffssst......, but that's part of the fun too.

Most of the time my flintlocks fire so fast, I can't distinguish the three stages identified by Norton Commando. However, I've had one slow one like the one robhof described. That is indeed the joy and fun of flintlocks.

nmbrian, in north central pa. where you can still piss off your porch if you want too. eastbank.

Aagh! Took my FIL to the range yesterday and completely forgot about taking some pics ... rats. He still had fun putting a few rounds through the Lyman Trade Rifle.
