Carry what feeds 100% for you.

Since I have yet to find anything my gun won't eat, I currently havee el-cheapo Winchester HPs in mine, because it was really time to switch out the Gold Dots.

Personally, when I have a choice, I'll have Gold Dots, Federal HST's, or CorBon DPX's.

But anything name brand will do the job, just shoot one more time.

I carry CorBon PowRBalls in my G19. I know the G19 will feed anything, but I don't take chances. I have NEVER had a problem with PowRBalls feeding in anything, ever. Feed like ball, work like HP, can't beat it.

I carry 147 gr. Federal hollow points. It feeds in all my 9mm's, it is subsonic for use with suppressors, and I buy in bulk.

Federal HST 147+P. I also use standard pressure HST 147, or 124+P HST or Gold Dot 124+P. Almost exclusively HST now though, and almost always 147 grain. It has more lead to work with for expansion, so it expands larger than the 124 grain version.

after alot of time, money, and testing....I have found that the speer gold dot 124 grain regular pressure works best for me.

I found a non +P offering by
Reeds Ammuition & Research
147 gr. Hornady JHP/XTP @ 1,090 FPS
and at $23.00/50 rds it's a dime a round
cheaper than the Double Tap 147 gr.
Gold DOts @ 1,125 FPS for $28/50 rds

So I'll order up a couple of boxes and
compare - it's open season right now on
PUmplins no? heh heh

FWIW - my CZ 75B shoots (no FTF/FTEs
after 950 rds to date ) everything.

115gr Winchester Silvertips(until I'm out),then it'll be WWB JHP 115gr.
Works well,priced right.

Thanks alot for the response guys!

From what I gather, on average +p 124 grain hollowpoints seem to be the way to go.

Is there a big difference between the standard pressure and +P in terms of recoil?

Is there a big difference between the standard pressure and +P in terms of recoil?

Yes. +P will nearly always have more felt recoil.
Sometimes, it's not much and sometimes it'll make ya go WHOA! It depends on caliber, maker, powder charge, bullet weight, weapon weight, weapon firing system (examples: breech lock or straight blowback) plus shooter's stance and grip on the weapon. These factors affect the felt recoil to some degree. Some greater and some to a lesser degree.

For example, in my .45ACP I use Winchester Ranger 230 gr JHP in regular pressure and +P. I can tell tell the difference because that +P round has a little more OOMPH (read "kick")! when fired. In my KelTec P-11 (9mm) the muzzle definitely has more rise (again read "kick") when +P rounds are fired through it.

Winchester RangerT 124 grain +P, Federal HST 124grain +P, and Corbon DPX 115 grain +P.

All of the following loads meet the FBI's standardized testing in both bare gel and through the barrier tests. The results are a combination of the FBI testing done to determine their new 2007 ammo contract, and the Firearms Institute. If you don't see a particular load on the list, it probably didn't pass:

9 mm:
Barnes XPB 105 & 115gr JHP (copper bullet)
Federal Tactical Bonded 124gr+P JHP (LE9T1)
Speer Gold Dot 124gr+P JHP
Winchester Ranger-T 124gr+P JHP (RA9124TP)
Winchester Partition Gold 124gr JHP (RA91P)
Winchester Ranger-T 127gr+P+ JHP (RA9TA)
Federal Tactical Bonded 135gr+P JHP (LE9T5)
Federal HST 147gr JHP (P9HST2)
Remington Golden Saber 147gr JHP (GS9MMC)
Speer Gold Dot 147gr JHP
Winchester Ranger-T 147gr JHP (RA9T)
Winchester Ranger Bonded 147gr JHP (RA9B/Q4364) FBI Load

.40 S&W:
Barnes XPB 140 & 155gr JHP (copper bullet)
Speer Gold Dot 155gr JHP
Federal Tactical Bonded 165gr JHP (LE40T3)
Winchester Ranger-T 165gr JHP (RA40TA)
Winchester Partition Gold 165gr JHP (RA401P)
Federal HST 180gr JHP (P40HST1)
Federal Tactical Bonded 180gr JHP (LE40T1)
Remington Golden Saber 180gr JHP (GS40SWB)
Speer Gold Dot 180gr JHP
Winchester Ranger-T 180gr JHP (RA40T)
Winchester Ranger Bonded 180gr JHP (RA40B/Q4355) FBI Load

.45 ACP:
Barnes XPB 185gr JHP (copper bullet)
Federal HST 230gr JHP (P45HST2)
Federal HST 230gr+P JHP (P45HST1)
Federal Tactical Bonded 230gr+P JHP (LE45T1)
Speer Gold Dot 230gr JHP
Winchester Ranger-T 230gr JHP (RA45T)
Winchester Ranger-T 230gr+P JHP (RA45TP)
Winchester Ranger Bonded 230gr JHP (RA45B)

Notice that the heavier loads which also have greater sectional densities faired much better than the lighter loads with lower sectional densities. Anything on the list will serve you well. Right now, I like the Federal Tactical Bonded 9mm 135gr+P.

My personal preference is for the Hornady 9mm 147 gr. "TAP" XTP JHP because it meets the criteria that I want it to satisfy.

I don't waste too much time worrying about what type of SD ammunition others carry or why they do so. I firmly believe that so long as one does some reasonable research and sticks with any of the high quality, premium SD loads that are offered by the large ammunition manufacturers (in whatever weight appeals to them) that they cannot go wrong.

Some Great loads.

I am with NG VI on this one. The Federal Tactical 147gr +P HST Rocks! I use this load almost Exclusively now. The Federal 147gr non plus P HST and Winchester 147gr Bonded are also Excellent Choices. The modern 147gr Ammo just cannot be beat for Penetration and Expansion. A lot of people I have noticed say they do not need LE Ammo that Penetrates Barriers such as Auto Glass, Wallboard, etc. What they do not realize is that Ammo that Penetrates that well in a Human Body, Crushes Bone, Arteries, has a Longer Wound Channel and more of chance to do some Major Damage. Thats what makes it a Great Stopper:evil:

The Best to All!
