For defense I would lean towards the Mini-14, but nothing beats a shotgun backed up by a .45ACP. :D

If I went old skool, I want one of my Swedish Mausers. That round will do anything I need to do. Any tacticality would come from the outstanding accuracy. If I went newer school, I would have to think that something like a Saiga in .308 would do whatever tricks I needed. The letter before B, letter after Q in .308 would be even better, lol.

What do you find is a good reload for your 338 federal, as I have one to and want to start reloading my own soon as I find powder and primers, Thanks dave

Probably been said, but I would either go for a Winchester 94 in 30-30, or any 30-30 lever gun---

That or an AK47, AKR-- WASR-- whatever..

Ipersonally have a WASR 10 that is PPOA (Pie plate of angle) at 100 yds-- I bought it for a cheap hog gun, and stayed for dessert-- 8*)

:)

You mentioned hunting with it, that's why I'd lean towards a 12 ga. Remington 870 with a 21 inch barrel and rifle sights/rifled choke tube. I've hunted with mine, and used it in IDPA side matches to good effect. I'm pretty handy with a shotgun.

Mini 14, AK and Marlin lever gun came to mind as well.

I had two Model 94's, and was planning on adding a couple more to my collection. I did worry about the occasional jam that required significant dis assembly to fix, ( happened to me twice)as well as the challenges in operating from the prone position. I also did not like the need to work rounds through the action to unload.

Also, just after Winchester closed its doors, prices were climbing, so i switched to Mosins. Rugged, simple, easy to dis assemble , easier to safely unload, and more powerful than the 30-30. Also cheaper to acquire.

Only centerfires I own right at the moment.

I wouldn't mind a Swiss 96/11 in .308 though. With some extra mags.

Sweet shooting, fast rifle. Should have kept one...

marlin 1895 in 45-70 makes the short list

take care,

Tom

Ole' reliable,

Either a Winchester or Marlin in 30-30. (I have both and by a very thin margin prefer my Marlin) There are other good choices for rifle and caliber, but none have stood the test of time like the good ole' Thirdy Thirdy.

It has been the general American rifle for over 100 years. It has taken every animal that exists in the North American continent. Even acknowledging it is not the best choice for some of our biggest beasts, it has and will get the job done.

It was the personal Tactical rifle choice for Americans too, for a lot of years.

up until you could get a 30 Carbine for peanuts, and later the old Garands.

It still can do most everything GOOD. Also, women, children AND LIBERALS don't immediately go running into the night screaming in hysterical fear when you pull it out.

Besides every American Rifleman needs at least one.

Go figure.

Fred

If I could only have one "non pistol" I would probably go with a carbine rather than a rifle...either .357 lever, .30 M1 Carbine or Beretta Cx4.

CRF Left hand in (classic long action) .300 Win Mag, topped with a Swarovski 2.5-10x42
Its in the other room!

My Marlin 336 in 35 Remington with its aperture sight. Otherwise the old 721b Remington (lefty) in 30-06 with its 20" barrel and Burriss 2X7 scope.

30-30 Lever Action. Sure, it's not a long-range sniper rifle, and it would be silly to put a high-powered scope on it, and it would look ridiculous in plastic, but it gets the job done.

deleted by poster. I didn't notice the age of the thread.

its alright, I posted in a a 2 year old thread once, it happens ;)

Did you ever decide on a rifle as a ranch gun/go to gun in a defensive situation?

I did actually did decide, I picked up the mini 14 tactical.
