Favorite moonclip loading tools?

I have used the moonclip tool for a number of years. Change center shaft to load 625 & 627 clips. Works great! bob

The moonclip tool is neat, I have never had an issue loading them, it's popping the spent one out that's a pain.

Like you, I do not have a problem loading a 45 moonclip. For popping out the empties, I use a piece of tubing that fits over the spent round. I filed a ledge on the end and it goes past the clip. A simple twist and the empty pops out.

I use an early generation Moonclip tool. Works great. The updated version costs $40, while the BMT tool costs $80. What does the BMT do better?

Drop the rounds in, spin, go shoot.

When you get home, drop the spent moons in, spin, have a beer. ;)

And if you don't have enough moonclips for a full range session or a match, you can unload & reload a spent moon in much less time and with much less ado than it takes with other contraptions.

I think the other thing that factors into this is how many revolvers you have that take moon clips.

With the Moonclip Tool, you can order an extra arbor for 5 bucks for the different revolver, but with BMT you need to purchase a separate $80.00 BMT Mooner for each revolver that you own.

I use the moonclip tool for loading and a piece of tubing made from a golf shaft that I touched against a grinder to leave a lip in it, that unloads all the shells into the tube for easy removal.

Does no one just use .45 Auto Rims?

If you're just plinking at the range, it's an option, but otherwise, it becomes problematic. For one thing, the whole point of using .45 in moons is to be able to use the more common .45ACP case, and to reload quicker.

On top of that, good .45AR speedloader options are pretty much limited to the SL Variant (which is expensive and tough to find). To make matters worse, the .45AR rim is tiny, so there's not much rim holding the rounds into the speedloader, and not much rim for the ejector to grab. The likelihood of a botched .45AR reload is pretty high, then, compared to, say .38spl/.357mags in a speedloader.

Finally, if you're shooting in competition where moonclips can't be used (IDPA SSR, ICORE Classic), you'd be better off with softer-shooting .38s, because that's what your competition will be doing. Otherwise, use moons where everyone else is, too (e.g. IDPA ESR or USPSA).

CHecked out BMT Mooners $ 80

Wow I'll pass

If you're shooting a lot, the BMT is a godsend, and the cost is small compared to your cost to shoot all those rounds in the first place.

Never tried a loading tool. Never felt the need. For unloading them I use a spent .308 case. Just insert the open end of the rifle case into the open end of the pistol case and use it for leverage. Works great.

I've tried other methods of getting empties out of the moon clips, but the mooncliptool really does make it much easier. Too it assists in loading up the clips, if you are of the penchant to load a bunch at once. An anti-thumb buster of sorts.

I understand that the center axle or stub can be changed out to use the tool with 38s or similar. I haven't tried it with any other cartridges than 45 ACP.
