Favorite Rifle Cartridge Just Because…

Favorite Rifle Cartridge Just Because …
Well, this month it’s my semi-custom Remington M660 in .350 Rem. Magnum.

6.8lbs unscoped …

Chambered for the world’s first short magnum. But whether full-power or down-loaded to .35 Winny levels, it’s a super-versatile cartridge in a handy, quick-pointing envelope.

I have an unnatural fascination with the 257 Weatherby Mag, though I have sold both of the rifles I have owned that were chambered in 257 WM.

Funny you should say that as I’m in the same boat. Have had 3, sold all 3, and am content running my 25-06 now. Still have a pile of brass and dies on hand in case that perfect deal comes along.

300 win mag as ammo is readily available most anywhere should you need more or forget to pack when you travel. Can be loaded for the biggest of NA game and also tamed down for smaller critters.

Barrel length of a win mag I believe is best at 26” but more often than not with a production rifle it will be 24”. I use a can when possible/allowed so I shy away from anything longer than 24”

250 savage. A 100gr ballistic tip over 36.5gr of big game is moa and cooking along at 3000 fps. Perfect for deer and antelope at any sane range. Mine is a stevens 200 that is a switch barrel to 223. Just change the barrel, bolt head, and magazine and voila. Varmint to big game in 30 minutes.
The 308 is a close runner up. Antelope to elk, it just works.

I’ve been scratching my head over this one for a while, not quite sure where I would land.

I’m typically quite rational and objective, so “why I like a cartridge” tends to be based objectively on performance in a given application; the application which I might enjoy only for some subjectivism.

But I do come back to 45-70 in my mind each time I read this thread, as well as 416 Rigby. Thinking now as I’m writing this, I REALLY like the 17 MachIV, for no good reason, and considering the MachIV, I REALLY like the 17HM2 also - also for no good reason. I’ve always wanted a bolt action 17HM2, and really want to convert a Ruger Mark IV to it as well, for absolutely no reason.

I have a sweet spot for the MachIV. My first was a Bullberry barrel for a G2 contender. Messed up and sold that. Next was a Cooper rifle. That got stolen in an office burglary. I’m still waiting for that one to show back up one day.

If we’re talking odd balls, I had a 219 Zipper once ….

. I’ve always wanted a bolt action 17HM2

I assembled a 10/22 in .17hm2. it blew up fairly regular even with a heavy bolt handle, and heavy springs......still when it was working it was enough to convince me i want a bolt gun.

less than useless here.
Only one place carries one brand of ammo, nothing id want to hunt with it and cant legally shoot it on 99% of public land......

STILL its on the will own list.....no exploding 10/22 this time tho.

Adcoch1 the 270 win is based off the 30/06 .The first hunting rifle I had was a 270 win stevens 200 I believe it is .I shot a boatload of deer with that rifle .Still have that old 270.But I won a Remington 7600 in 30/06 at a gun bash.Always wanted a 7600 so that rifle replaced the 270 for hunting. So I would have to say the 30/06 is my favorite just because.

I know all about the 270, and I should like it, but I just don't. I need to buy one, I even have dies, brass and bullets for it from a buddy and go kill a deer with one. But I have a 35 whelen, a 280 rem, and I always have 30-06 rifles around. 270 and 25-06 are the only ones I haven't owned in that family...

My 700BDL in 25-06 was my only hunting rifle for about two decades. It was used by myself and a good friend. Between us we brought home Mule Deer, Antelope, and lots of Elk. It is still my favorite rifle if not my favorite cartridge. I bought the rifle used in the mid '70s for what I remember as $135 with a Wide Angle (TV Screen) Weaver that is still on it and works just fine!
