Favorite Rifle Cartridge Just Because…

Iam really considering sending my 7600 to Jess to have it rebored to 35 whelen . How do you like your 35 whelen ? I have been considering it for a few years. But my 7600 shoots really well so I haven’t done it yet.
If I had a 7600 it would be a 35 whelen. I love my whelen, it's a savage 110 I spun a new shaw barrel on. Shoots cast really nice for fireforming the brass and plinking. Cheap to shoot that way.

Adcoch1 the 270 win is based off the 30/06 .

I know it is splitting hairs, but 30-06 and 270 are both based on 30-03. The 30-03 came 1st and was designed for the 1903 rifle with 220 gr bullets in mind. The military decided 150 gr bullets were better and the cartridge case and rifles were slightly modified and morphed into the 30-06.

For unknown reasons when Winchester developed the 270 they chose the older 30-03 case to work with. But they are close enough to call them in the same family.

I've also just never warmed up to the 270 for completely irrational reasons. I've used both 30-06 and 280 and fully understand in the real world they all do the same thing.

And just for fun, a .243 Ackley.

One thing that has been really cool to see is the vast array of rifle cartridges that people consider their favorite. The funny thing is, we use most of these cartridges for the same purposes. Most of us are hunting deer sized game or target shooting with these cartridges, but we’ll argue all day about which one is the “best”. It appears we’ve all been successful to some degree with the cartridges of our choice to the point that we consider them our favorite. Lots of really solid picks so far.

I’ve been scratching my head over this one for a while, not quite sure where I would land.

I’m typically quite rational and objective, so “why I like a cartridge” tends to be based objectively on performance in a given application; the application which I might enjoy only for some subjectivism.

But I do come back to 45-70 in my mind each time I read this thread, as well as 416 Rigby. Thinking now as I’m writing this, I REALLY like the 17 MachIV, for no good reason, and considering the MachIV, I REALLY like the 17HM2 also - also for no good reason. I’ve always wanted a bolt action 17HM2, and really want to convert a Ruger Mark IV to it as well, for absolutely no reason.
I’m the same way. I’m usually pretty logical about cartridge selection. I really like 308, 6.5 Creedmoor and 300 Win Mag. All three are common and easy to find ammo for. They would honestly give me all the performance I need and I have multiple rifles in each of those chamberings, but 6.5x55 is just old school cool and I like it. Same with my 250 Savage. I also have a stupid fascination with 257 Weatherby and 257 Roberts. Hell, I like em all, I guess.

Among several favorite calibers, I have to say the .222 Rem. is my sentimental favorite because it was the first CF caliber I owned and the first I reloaded for. Among the .222's I've owned, the one I'll never part with is this early SAKO with Mannlicher style stock. It's shown here with two scopes: the vintage Lyman Wolverine that I used first and keep for old time memories, and a much newer Leupold 10X AO that I mount when I want to remind myself of the accuracy of a SAKO .222 from over a half century of yesterdays. 21A_3413 (3).JPG 21A_3419 (4).JPG 21A_3429 (2).JPG 21A_3424 (2).JPG

Also for fun the .30 calibers fall in the favorites category.

@Cocked & Locked

I’m glad you posted some of these I always enjoy your posts I hope your doing well now back to the topic on hand I’ve put lots of thought to it and yes I’ve shared this before but that first time I put 5 shots through the same hole with that 6.5 Creedmoor something just clicked so to speak and rifle shooting made more sense and it’s all I wanted to do :)

For me it's the .270 Win.

Yes, I drank the Jack O'Connor Kool-Aid over half a century ago, and frankly it tastes just as good today as it did back then.

The 270 Win is an odd one for me. I’ve owned a couple. Killed a fine Mississippi whitetail with a stainless/laminate Ruger No. 1 in 270 at 250 yards. He was maybe forty yards from the spot of the shot when I found him. Zero blood trail, but the cartridge obviously did its job. I love the 6.8 SPC which is just an extremely light loaded 270.
For some reason, however, even though I really liked both of the 270 Wins I owned, I didn’t keep them and I’ve never felt overly confident in the 270 Win. Don’t get me wrong, I know these thoughts are purely unsubstantiated and I fully realize that a 270 Win walks all over my favorite 6.5x55, but I just never have loved it. Humans are weird creatures…

The cartridge that I really like for no good reason (except that it is exceptionally useful for me) is the 22 WMR. Don't know why, but I have been fascinated by it since I first came across when I was a kid in the '60's.

Besides, my taste in center fires is so fickle I could never have just one favorite cartridge--or even one favorite rifle.

For me the .40/65 WCF is my favorite. Short range, long range, in between, it's all good. Good thumping on the business end and easy on the shoulder. For the newer rounds it will have to be the .300 Winchester magnum. It gets there a lot quicker with authority. Not so easy on the shoulder!
