I'm not a hunter, but its near impossible to beat the $$$/moa of the Savage or Weatherby Vandguards. I voted for the Savage because you generally have more selection.

I prefer my mosin 91/30 for hunting both Wolves and bathing Nazi generals. (+1 if you get the reference.)

Really though, I don't do much hunting and when I do its only rabbits or squirrels which get felled with an air rifle. If you hit one of those with 7.62x54R there isn't much left other than a red smudge on the ground

Savage model 340B, 30-30, bolt action, side-mounted 4x32 simmons master series scope. it will throw the remington 170 grain corelokts into a one inch circle at 100 yards. Thats bear/whitetail medicine. Most of all with a favorite rifle is comfort and confidence.

Oh, I don't know. I use a lot of Rugers, primarily because their stock design fits me very well. And so I own Rugers suitable for everything from Coues deer to elephant. I don't have a varmint rifle because that's not my game, but Ruger makes them if you want them. And while I haven't looked into it in detail, I suspect a fan of nearly any of the makes listed by the OP could outfit himself similarly.

A Wby Mark V in '06 was my pet hunting rifle for some thirty years. But it alternated with a Sako Forester carbine in .243 for "easier" deer hunting.

I had a Ruger 77 heavy-barrelled Swift that was a tack-driver; now I have a Ruger 77 Mk II in .223 which is also a tack-driver.

Nowadays I'm quite pleased with my 700 Ti in 7mm08.

I tend to recommend by the fit of a rifle to a potential buyer, and then it's a matter of "pretty" and billfold. By and large, IMO, brand doesn't really matter for accuracy, since (again IMO) most anything can be tweaked to give tight groups...

Ive used a Marlin 336ts for almost 30 years now. Placing XS ghost ring sights, a Butler Creek Alaskan Magnum sling, and a Butt cuff from cabela's on it turned it into a handy truck gun as well.

I voted Winchester M-70 despite it not being my favorite, second favorite, or even third (they weren't listed). My favorite is my Whitworth Express Mauser in .375H&H, sure it may be a bit much for deer, but you can tone it down, or load it up and hunt anything that walks the earth, it also just fits me perfectly. My second favorite is probably the Browning 1895 in .30-06Spfd, nothing like a good lever gun chambered for the old '06. Third is the another Mauser, currently a 6mmRem., but will be getting rechambered for .280Rem. before long (BTW, I imagine this one will top the list after I do so).

I can understand leaving out obscure rifles like the Win./Browning 1895, but how can you leave out the bolt gun that started it all...the Mauser? (btw, mine are commercial Mausers, so surplus doesn't apply)
