I caught a video on the Ole YouTube about their new line of ammunition for leverguns, called hammer down... anyone seen used or like this new stuff. None seen in my adventures.

I’ve heard of it but I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in the wild it’s supposed to feed more reliably something about turning down the case rim somewhat iirc

By the title, I assumed this was a thread about heavy-handed Aye Tee Eff enforcement.....

Me too. It's funny how much writing can be misinterpretd because of normal everyday mistakes like dangling modifiers or assuming that your reader can read your mind.

Advice? Put the reader's head on your shoulders.

...By that I mean....

I bought all of it up in my area for 30-30, probably almost 20 boxes and a lot before prices got crazy. Haven't really used it since the rear sight on my Henry is out of whack and I haven't done anything about it. That and the only range close by I can shoot at requires slow fire from the bench.

When you get to it I'd be very happy to hear about impressions and or results.

Man I hate places like that. The public range here makes you fire from the bench shooting through this big metal chute in front of you. It's like your aiming through an air duct. When am I gonna be in a hunting or HD situation where I'd be firing under such conditions? Pointless for anything other than sighting a scope or working up a BP load

“Let’s eat Grandma”. “Let’s eat, Grandma”.

A life saved by a comma.
Or the old homonym issue.

On the OP. I've never heard of the ammo. But I am game for any Federal ammo. It's on the top of my if I have to buy factory list.

I don't think it's BRAND NEW but it definitely hasn't been exactly filling up the shelves around here in OKC so idk. I have seen a box or two of the 45-70 stuff at gun shows for stupid prices...

Well that's definitely a deterant. It's not bringing home dinner so I'm not going to pay crazy prices.

It’s just normal Federal ammo in lever action cartridges with lever action marketing.

It’s Federal. Buy with confidence.
Similar to any heavy for caliber 9mm or 45 ACP ammo which says "SUBSONIC" on the box when any 147gr 9mm or 230gr 45 ACP load is going to naturally subsonic... And the kicker is they usually will have the "normal" stuff right next to the "subsonic" stuff and the "subsonic" stuff is a few bucks more lol... There's a sucker born every minute I guess. Sometimes they will have copper bases instead of lead bases which WOULD make a difference in the cleaning difficulty of a suppressor though!
Here's an example of 40 S&W ammo at Academy

Spotted some of this ammo at Walmart and walked past. I'm half tempted to go back and grab a box. Never shot a bonded bullet yet, but they look good. 20230814_102942.jpg

I don't even own a 30-30 and I would've gotten that to have for our customers at gunshows... Dealer cost through Chattanooga is just under 26 bucks a box (out of stock-Allocated), at least for our small time gig, bigger customers such as wally world get much cheaper pricing straight from Federal...

Msrp is 40. So I'm considering getting a box just for kicks... when ammo dries up again I can get my money back on the regular boxes I have... not trying to profit, just rotate stock.

Dang idk what kinda of stuff Federal is smoking lol. That stuff would be like 60 from the other guys at the shows... (if they had any) lol. We charge barely anything in mark-up compared to the other guys but it seems like people aren't really buying much lately... Anyway, I'll let it be and get the thread back on track. Thanks!

I was hoping that one of the specialty 30-30 rounds would be srp. This would have been a good candidate. The Hornady lvr is a ball slow powder, not a good choice.

I've found that lately and bought it all locally along with a few boxes of the 45-70. The 45-70 runs about $50 a box which is what other brands go for. I still need to fix the sights on my Henry or put a scope on it and run a box thru of 30-30. I do hope to run across the .357 version soon and try that.

This is not "normal" Federal ammo. This uses a bonded bullet that is unique to the Hammer Down line. When you go to Federal's website, they only list two bonded loads of the many loads they offer, so it's not "normal" in that regard. Hammer Down is listed as a bonded soft point. Fusion is listed as a Fusion soft point. I suppose it is possible that the Hammer Down load is the same as the Fusion load, but I suspect with the different bullet description, they are different bullets.

"All options in the HammerDown product line feature molecularly bonded bullets. This process of bonding copper plating to a lead core is similar to how Federal’s Fusion and Speer’s Gold Dot bullets are manufactured."

I agree they are not normal, I find the comment they are not fusion bullets highly suspect... I go as far as saying the 30-30 version is a fusion shell in a nickle case...
