Federal offense to have a laser on your gun without applying the sticker?

I was reading that if you have a laser on your gun that comes with a sticker to apply to the gun (ie: a lasermax internal unit or CrimsonTrace grip or even a rifle sight device with a laser), and you don't put the sticker on the gun that comes with the laser unit - it's a federal offense.

Anybody know about this?

none of my guns have them.... so now I'm nervous.

I'm wondering what would happen if I had a self defense situation come up, and I was cleared of everything because it was self-defense, except I was charged with a federal offense for having a laser without a sticker. That would be ridiculous.

It's a big what-if of course.... but if you're carrying everyday, it's something to think about.

I agree with Bogie on this. Probably work related. SOME Industrial lasers have higher power and different wavelength than what we use. *cough* JDSU

From the Crimson Trace message boards:
http://forums.crimsontrace.com/index.php?action=search2
The FDA (who regulates lasers) requires that installer of any Class IIIA laser product install warning signage/labels.

...or want to know all the nuances of FDA law and how it applies to your warning labels...why don’t you give them a call at 1-800-442-2406.

The 800 number is CT's customer service line. I tried to call but they are only open 7am - 5pm

IANAL, but I don't think it applies to the consumer. My Kimber came with them from the factory and the warning label was on there when I got it. Kind of like the mattress tags, the manufacturer must put them on, but the consumer may remove them.

Sounds more like the lable on the matress. Against the law to sell with out the lable but once you buy it, one can rip it off. Same thing I bet.

my 92 never saw the sticker after I put on my CT's...and the guy selling me the CT didn't say that it was LAW for me to put the sticker on.

bah...stickers? STICKERS? We don't need no stinking stickers!

D

OSHA only regulates the relationship between employees and employers so it won't be OSHA.

FDA regulates the posting reqirement for lasers and, again, establishes requirements for businesses not individuals.

Civil liability is an entirely different matter though, but someone would have to be harmed by being flashed with the installed laser for that to come into play.

Yeah, I thought about putting that sticker on mine. Right along with the one that says it is dangerous to look down the barrel when firing the gun. :neener::neener::neener:

I think the stickers are there to protect Crimson Trace and the other laser manufacturers from suits.............If you buy a laserr grip from them and somehow damage your eyes by looking at the beam up close, the manufacturer can say you were warned that lasers may cause eye problems........
In court they can point out the warnings in the owner's manual and show that the company even told you to put the sticker on the weapon with a laser installed.........It's pretty good proof that they let you know the dangers of laser beams or anyone else that picks up the gun..........

I didn't put that dumb sticker on my GLOCK 27, that's for sure..........

or you could put a big plaque on the side of your gun like the ones in elevators saying that the operating permits, safety warnings and zombies-killed logbook are available for review in the downtown office.

No sticker came with my laserlyte laser, although there was printed warning in the instructions to not shine the damn thing into your or anyone else's eyes.Of course that would break rule #2 of firearm safety,"never point a weapon at anything you don't intend to shoot."#1 is all firearms are loaded....

Well darn. Now y'all have gone and let the cat out of the bag. When the word got out about it being ok to tear the tags off of mattresses, it was looking pretty bleak for the "mattress police." They were looking at massive layoffs, untll the laser "tags" came along.

Now that everybody knows it's ok to not put the warning sticker on, it's looking bad for them again. :(

Inventory scanners have the same laser warnings on a new unit (probably less power), but when I used to use/mantain them, the factory never seemed to care if the label was missing/obscured on old units sent in for service. So I'm assuming that as long as one was supplied by the manufacturer at the time of sale, it doesn't matter if it remains on.

Seeing the laser beam in my eyes from a laser sight...well my eye health is the least of my concerns at that point!!!

Right along with the one that says it is dangerous to look down the barrel when firing the gun.

Doesn't Ruger print that on their barrels? Check Sect. 3G, Paragraph 8, somewhere near the ejector housing.

They'll want stickers on the guns next, maybe with such advice as "do not eat" included . . .

That's cuz those lazers are dangerous.......they should register those things:uhoh:

"is it too much to ask to get some sharks with frikin' lazer beams on their heads?"-Dr. Evil

The stickers are there to make the corporate lawyers and insurance companies happy. If anyone wants to know who really runs this country, look no further than that. We see evidence of it everyday. The government doesn't have nearly the power to regulate our daily behavior that insurance companies do... :barf:
