Feeling Helpless In NY

He correct

DoubleNaught is spot on there.

THE weapon is the mind / brain.

That is THE weapon that conceived and created all other weapons.

If your not "armed" in mind = then NO tool will help.

You feel helpless because you didn't have a gun and saw a crime occurring in close proximity to your room and so you call somebody else (the manager) and "suggested strongly" he call the cops????????

I think the first step to you not feeling helpless is first to learn what to do in a crisis. YOU or your wife should have been calling 911 FIRST, not the manager.

If you were afraid that the guy might bust in, why were you not barricading your door with furniture from the room? You obviously had plenty of time to be doing things to benefit your situation.

You should not feel defenseless in that sort of situation simply because you don't have a gun. A gun should not be the determining factor to being able to defend yourself. If it is, then you are way underprepared on a general level. Guns are great tools, but you have many options in a hotel room with which you can defend yourself.
I believe I already mentioned I had my weapon of choice. Yes, I could have called 911 assuming that dialing 9 for an outside line would also allow dialing 911. I just figured I would let Red Roof worry about it since it wasn't our door the nut job was trying to beat down. He was pretty focused on that door across the hall. Had he come to our door, as I mentioned, I had a plan. I was not under prepared on any general level. I looked at my options as to a weapon and decided on a large butcher knife we had used at the beach. Also, as I stated the nut case did not appear to be armed.

Having a gun wasn't any form of determining factor. My point was that I simply missed the ability to be able to carry my gun in NY. So yes, when this started happening there was a feeling of helplessness. While I am sure you could have handled this much, much better I merely pointed out what I did.

If you are driving, just bring a shotgun or rifle to New York. You can have a long gun in most of the state without any sort of license. I think NYC is the only place that requires some special license. At least you have something for your hotel room.

If you really want to bring a handgun, you could enter into a NRA sanctioned match. I believe you can only be in New York less than a week if you are bringing a handgun as a non resident and shooting a match. Of course you can't carry the handgun around with you.

There are a lot of tools, like 4 d cell maglites , that are good to have. Do you golf or play baseball? Pepper spray is good too. If you fly and don't check bags, you can buy pepper spray when you get to your destination.

I fully understand the drawbacks of not having a firearm.

However, don't let the lack of a sidearm keep you from visiting places. In Georgia we can carry in most places. However--I am retired military, so in order to avoid a trip to the armory to relinquish my weapon while on base, I don't carry when I plan to go on the base. I work at a college, where there is a gun ban, so I do not carry at work as a condition of employment. But I always have my can of wasp/hornet power spray from Home Depot, in my vehicle I also always have my hardwood stick, and in my office I always have my aluminum baseball bat and my four foot length of rebar.

A firearm is not the only way to stay safe.

NYC

Not many sticking up for the Big Apple????
Well, I will. I realize that the point of the OPs discomfort was not having a gun Is baatfurther secure his intelligent decisions.
Yes, NYC has asinine restrictions about firearms, handguns in particular.
That incident could have occurred just about anywhere in the country that you can find a motel.....i do understand, though, that in some other places you would have had your CCW.
I have lived in NY all of my life....in NYC for the last thirty-four years. I have never felt the need to carry a gun. I have never felt threatened.
There are many worse places...I fact, if you google for the most dangerous cities in America, you will be given a list of the 100 most dangerous. Where do you think NYC falls on that list? It is not #1. It is not in the top 10.
It is not on the list at all.
You want to google for food, for sports, museums, music, art, theater, culture?
NYC is most assuredly ok those lists.

The woman I mentioned in a previous post grew up in NYC. Before she was in college with me, she was an EMT in Queens. She wished she had an AR and body armor every day she went to work. NYC's tagline should be "Your experience may vary."

Of course

"Your experience may vary."
Absolutely.
This is especially true when citing the experience of an EMT or police officer....people who get called into bad situations and bad places on a regular basis. Their experience is not the norm.

Make no mistake, there are bad places in NYC and more than enough bad people. I stay away from bad places, as do most people. Bad people....yeah. No control there. So far, I have not had to wish for a gun. So far.
In any case, my point was that NYC is not the horrible place to live that it is often made out to be and certainly less dangerous than many other cities.
