FEG Hi Power trade

My buddy has one and had me remove the magazine safety for him, so I had a good opportunity to compare it with my 1970s T-series FN HiPower.

I would say you are getting 80% of a HiPower at 30% of the price. The fit and finish are almost as nice as the FN, the interior machining is a little rougher, but functionally it was perfect. The only minor problem he has is that the slide release will not depress the FEG magazine followers far enough to clear the hold-open, but we tried some FN mags and the problem went away.

My friends gun has the ring hammer, flared mag-well, and extended slide release- all nice touches that I wish my FN had! (Though not all FEGs have all of these features)

Overall I was impressed. It was a high quality copy of one of the classic pistols of all time, and as high as FN prices are, they are only going to go up, so I would say snatch the FEG, bro.

You can easily replace the LC9 anytime, but good HiPowers and their clones don't come along every day!

A friend wants to trade a FEG model PJK-9hp Hi Power clone. Looking at Gun Broker I see the values are from $250 to $350. He said he purchased his new about 1991. I have a Ruger LC9s and one mag. Just getting a some perspectives on a trade. Thanks in advance.

Unless you are in a position to purchase the FEG HP clone outright for a fair price & keep the LC9s, I’d definitely do that trade. You’re trading a gun still in production and easy to replace for a gun that is getting harder to find. The value of this one might be at the high end of that Gun Broker price range, since it is probably in pretty good condition if it was purchased new & properly maintained.

Made the trade. haven't taken it home yet. It looks to be about 98% blue with the wood grips. I'll ring it out on my next days off.
Thanks everyone for the advice.
You won't regret it, the FEG I have is basically 100% compatible with Browning parts. Any tweak and upgrade you could do to a "real" Hi-Power, you can do to the FEG. And as I remember, it's all forged, nothing cast.

Good job! I got mine at a gun show in 1988 (or so), for $200 cash. I don't know how many thousands of rounds I've put through it since then, but it's been a lot. The only time it ever malfunctioned was a long time back when I shot a $5 box of Chinese 9mm ammo through it. Other than that, it's been perfect. The tiny sights and my poor vision limit my personal accuracy, but the pistol itself is very accurate. The finish has held up well over the decades. It's still a very nice-looking pistol, and would more than adequate for SD if needed.

I had a Feg Hi power and I really liked it except mine had a defect. Where the barrel and the rear of the chamber with the locking lug were two pieces, apparently soldiered together, mine was only soldered on the bottom half. I could slide a feeler gauge halfway through the joint. It didn't seem to effect the function of the pistol but it bugged me and I got rid of it... I planned on buying another one but by then the later models being imported didn't have the nice checkered wood grips of the early models and so I never bought another... I was looking for a Browning after that..

Yep had the same problem with mine accept the chamber and barrel actually did separate and it has been a paper weight since.

Even FN went to a 2 piece barrel, in the late '60s, IIRC. A replacement FN barrel should work in a FEG.

Glad you made the trade. They are excellent pistols. I have one that I paid $230 for a couple years ago. I’m glad I did. Took out the mag disconnect. Sweet trigger. Gun’s been reliable with everything I’ve put in it. Looks a little rough, don’t care. Maybe i’ll update the sights. Not sure bout that yet. I changed the springs and just plan to shoot the heck out of it.

A friend of mine has one of the two toned FEG Hi-Powers (polished, deep blued slide and some sort of matte chrome finish on the frame). Along with some high visibility sights and a half way decent trigger pull, it was (at the time and still is), a great and less expensive way to go if you were looking for a Hi-Power copy.

Gotta be careful tho. Some use a different action based on a S&W auto, and some have extended safeties and slide stops that are proprietary and unique to the gun. And, then, some are direct HP copies. Mine is one of these. There was an excellent online article published years ago called “Decoding the FEG Hi-Power”. It’s since been turned into an amazon book, i think... like 99 cents to buy, as I recall...

Good to know for the future... I still may pick up another Feg or a Browning one of these days... It's such a "classic" pistol.....

The double action FEGs are mechanically copied from the S&W 59, with some cosmetic nods to the High Power, but little to no parts interchangeability with either the FN or S&W. Even the magazines are different, the single-action using a 13 and the double a 14!

For an even more bizarre twist, FEG scaled up the double action into a single stack .45- resulting in something very similar to what a .45 S&W Model 39 would have been like.

BTW, if anyone stumbles across the "Mauser" model 80 or 81, these were just rebadged FEGs. Not that there was anything wrong with that and many of them are nickel plated.:)

Indeed. FEG is also suspected of making some fake FN’s that turned up in Iraq. Identical in appearance to an actual HP, they were serialized with fake numbers that didnt match anything known from FN, but also had FN Herstal markings on the slide like any other Belgian-produced gun.

Congrats and nice score :). I would have jumped all over that trade deal myself. It's always a good day when you can trade and average run-of-the-mill handgun for one of the best FEG hi Powers available. Now that you own a high-power I recommend that you spend $6 and buy the book "decoding the FEG Hi Power " like I did :) :

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1495...1525667266&sr=1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65

When you read the book you'll find out pretty much anything and everything you ever wanted to know about all the different models of hi power handguns available. You'll also learn that PJK-9HP is NOT, the model number.
That number was put there by KBI , the importer , not FEG. PJK is the importers girlfriend's initials and right off the top of my head I think her name was Pamela Jane and he used pjk-9HP on 5 different hi power garments . The P9, p9M, & the FP9 with both the Smith & Wesson and Browning actions .

I have a P9M stamped PJK-9HP that I bought myself for Christmas last year for $260 on sale to replace the Israeli Kareen mk1 Hi-Power that I was kicking myself in the proverbial butt for trading off a while back. The Israeli is virtually identical to my P9M except this FEG has an extended slide and magazine release as well as 3 Dot sights, which I like a lot better because the Israeli had the really small GI style Notch and post sights that were really hard to see and they sucked. When I was shopping around for another hi-power I promised myself that I'd pull the trigger on the first nice one I found and even if it had the crappy GI style sights I would have it machined for Dovetails and put 3 Dots on it . When I found this one I got lucky twice because I don't have to spend the extra money at the gunsmith shop :) ...
