THE CHAIR IS AGAINST THE WALL

Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s office confirmed that she will be introducing in the Senate Thursday a new version of the so-called assault weapon ban. A spokesman said the full text will be released at a press conference on Thursday.

The California Democrat intends to expand on the ban that expired in 2004, by including handguns and shotguns, in addition to rifles. She would decrease from two to one the number of cosmetic features on a gun to have it be considered an “assault weapon.” This means that if a gun has just one item like a pistol grip or bayonet lug, then it is illegal. Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed into law the same ban in New York last week.

Furthermore, instead of grandfathering in current firearms, she would create a national gun registry for the government to track lawful gun owners. Magazines would again be limited to 10 rounds.

Call your senators, folks. This is the opening salvo.

If you don't know who your senators are, or how to contact them, please go to http://www.senate.gov/ and use the drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner of the site.

So the government goes through all these steps to track lawful gun owners, but what are they doing to track unlawful gun owners??

Inquiring minds want to know...

What would you recommend we write to a senator who is obviously anti-2A and has responded to our messages with the "I support 2A, but..." responses? I've gotten one from one of my senators, and another poster on here got a similar response from the other.

Doesn't matter if they share your views or not. You should still write them a letter.

They need to know you're their constituent and you disagree with this legislation.

They all keep a tally sheet. Make them look at that tally sheet when they place their vote.

Anyone remember back in the 90's . . . back at band camp . . . oops wrong story.

Anyone remember when Rush Limbaugh every so often would give out the Capitol switchboard phone number and challenge his audience to call their member of Congress about an issue? He'd do it and it'd be shut down. He did it during the health care debate.

I propose we do it ourselves. Gun owners. We initiate it. Us. The guys on the 'net.

I propose that beginning this Thursday, January 24th at 10 Eastern, we call and ask for our Representative and Senator's staff. Tell them you oppose this bill - if you can get through. And I propose we don't stop calling until close of business Friday.

Be respectful. The operators are not political, they are salaried telephone operators.

Be respectful with the Congress member's staff. We are gentlemen and gentle ladies.

But we will make it clear we oppose this.

Thoughts?

Tell your legislators what you think. Your message does not have to be long or eloquent, but should clearly and respectfully tell them how you want them to vote.

I personally end messages to anti-2A legislators with a reminder that I am one of the 80 million gun owners in the US.

Bull Frog Ken.....I'm up for it. What about we start a new thread and then spread the word??

Just did. Senators Toomey and Casey.
Casey already said he would support AWB. I asked him to stand by his oath and prove he supports the 2nd as he said in a previous reply.
Toomey is hard to read. Two previous responses went into detail about mental health (he is a pediatric psychologist I believe). Not much mention of firearms, so not a definite no vote.

I really think the severity of this one is a negotiating ploy. Even she has to know there's very slim chance of passing somthing that broad, but the anti's can tone it down as a "compromise" to pull support from the weaker pro gun folks. Fl senator's 50/50 on it, rubio gave a generaly pro gun yet polititian speak response but nelson is fully behind awb etc.

im an NRA member, they better already know my feelings about messing with my gun rights.....

I've been writing my reps every week. This is the reply from Senator Sherrod Brown (D) Ohio:
Sen. Sherrod Brown (D) Ohio said:
Dear rjrivero:

Thank you for expressing your views about firearms legislation.

As a United States Senator, I took an oath to defend the Constitution. The Second Amendment makes clear that Americans have the right to own guns, and the Supreme Court over time has given meaning to this right.

When our children and families are no longer safe at our schools, in our malls, and in our movie theaters, then we as a country must take action. The shocking numbers of public shootings throughout the country last year, culminating in Newtown, Connecticut, demands that we engage in a serious national discussion about gun violence, not just in terms of weapons and bullets, but also including mental health access, public safety officers, and our responsibility both as individuals and a society.

Like all rights, it must be balanced against others. I have supported restrictions on the possession of assault-style weapons so our public safety officers are not put at increased risk, and restrictions on the ability of criminals to possess handguns but I fully support the right of Ohioans to own firearms.

Should the Senate consider this issue in the future, I will support common-sense reforms that protect both public safety and the rights of gun owners. Thank you again for contacting me.

Sincerely,

Sherrod Brown
United States Senator

This is the reply I got from Senator Rob Portman (R) OH.
Sen. Rob Portman (R) OH said:
Thank you for contacting me about our Second Amendment rights. It is good to hear from you.

I am a gun owner who believes in the right to bear arms in defense of self, family and property. During my 12 years serving in Congress, I received an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association for defending our Constitutional Rights. I opposed the so-called "assault weapons ban" and opposed the Brady Bill. I supported repealing both the Clinton gun ban and the Washington, D.C. gun ban. I voted to protect the private information of gun owners; to protect state gun laws; and to protect firearm and ammunition manufacturers, dealers or importers from lawsuits and damages related to criminal misuse by a third party.

As a life-long hunter, I also believe the rights and freedoms of hunters must be guarded and I developed an executive order that the president signed to enhance hunting and fishing opportunities at wildlife refuges and national preserves. As your Senator, I will continue to protect our Constitutional freedoms and will be a strong advocate for preserving these rights and traditions for future generations.

Thank you for taking the time to contact my office. For more information, I encourage you to visit my website at www.portman.senate.gov. Please keep in touch.

Sincerely,
Rob Portman
U.S. Senator

Don't make that mistake.

I've watched the news the past three weeks and seen about 3 dozen discussions where pro-gun control advocates are floating some survey that they say says NRA members want or are at least comfortable with more gun control.

They are whispering in the ears of our legislators, telling them the average NRA member will accept this. It's only the fringe who opposes it. Don't let them speak for you.

You speak for you.

She's asking for the moon, that's for sure.
And we'll smack her down.

Then she'll ask for a quick orbital trip around the moon.
And we'll smack her down.

Then she'll ask for a Molniya orbit.
And we'll smack her down.

Then she'll ask for Geosynchronous orbit.
And, guess what? We'll smack her down.

Then she'll ask for Medium earth orbit.
And she will be smacked down yet again.

And then she'll ask for low-earth orbit.
Only to be smacked down again.

And again.

And again.

I don't want to see her stupid ideas get off the drawing board, much less the launch pad.

Make no mistake, if we put everything we've got into this, we can turn the tide, but everyone, absolutely everyone, must do their part.

Everything is calculated in D.C. Reid will not introduce the bill if he feels they don't have the votes. Too early to make predictions but we should keep the pressure on Congress as suggested. Seeing how Reid is from Nevada, he knows it's not wise to bet against the House (our ace in the hole; and yes, that is a malapropism for Harry).

youre right, being a member of the NRA means im only 5% of the vocal gun crowd on capital hill.

Dear Senator,

I have received a message from your office stating that you would support further restrictions on weapons. Regardless of your use of the phrase "I support the Second Amendment, but...", I do not believe you support the Second Amendment, and by extension the entire Bill of Rights. As a law-abiding gun owner, I would consider it a form of undue prejudice to consider my rights (and the rights of millions like me) worth restricting for the sake of attempting to restrict a few madmen. Restrictions, I might add, that will not prevent madmen from commiting attrocities, due to the way criminals do not follow the law.

As such, I ask that you represent me by opposing gun control legislation, and supporting legislation that addresses the larger social issues that result in violence (economy, mental health, and overcrowded prisons). If you follow my request, I am willing to donate time and money to help your next election. If you vote in support of S. Feinstein's bill (or any other) to restrict my rights, I will donate time and money to helping your opponents replace your position in office.

Thank you for your time,

I'm thinking something like this, especially because I've gotten the anti responses from them.

That looks good Skribs. I like it. Make sure you mention Feinstein's bill

Justin,

If they stage a shooting (again...) it has a much better chance of passing. Don't ever let a crisis go to waste - either real or manufactured. But there's no conspiracy, because there are no conspiracies! Conspiracies are just the realm of conspiracy theorists! Lol.

I just hate it when they make the leap of 'logic' that banning guns automatically means safer citizens, as if it is somehow a proven fact.

The flip side is that it paints us as people who don't care if children die so long as we can continue to excercise some vague, antiquated 'right' that they don't consider to be important.

I'm a father, and I feel that my kids will be less safe if this nonsense becomes law.
In fact, I can prove it. My kids will be 66% less safe, as that is what the reduction of my magazine capacity will be if this law passes.

I too want my kids to be safe in malls and movie theaters, and I can catagorically state that they would be a lot safer if their daddy could carry the means to defend them against violent criminals.

As for being safe in school, well I'd certainly be a lot happier if there was a cop or security guard ready to perform the Mozambique Drill on any violent intruder.

Make no mistake, it's the gun grabbers that are responsible for these tragic deaths.
If they hadn't spent so long stigmatizing guns and gun owners, we'd have far fewer tragic events.
