Females W/Guns

I like an environment, that if something needs to be done, you do it, be it cooking, shooting, what ever. If a man or women has the idea, and it is right, it is a good idea, if not, it is a bad idea. The last thing we need, to to focus on the difference of everything, or "WHO" should do what, tends to make the true point, cloudy. If a man is a jerk, or a woman a jerk, the point is, they are jerks !! Find what works for you, and works for everyone in your life, and DO IT. Arc-Lite

Females and Guns

Being a male, my involvement falls into two parts.

1) Shotguns. I competed in clay games. I had ladies wanting to learn and Instructed many ladies in shotgunning. Some wanted to learn Skeet, variety of reasons, some had lady friends, be they wives, daughters, GFs of guys that shot Skeet that wanted to be a part of the fun, we also had some lesbians, invited to other lesbians, and I had no problem teaching and sharing. Some straight folks, of both genders did, I didn't.

I also had ladies under the legal age of 21 to buy a handgun or get a CCW whom I taught. Some had made a decison based on being a victim themselves of rape, assault , burglery ,robbery. Some had been abused by BFs and Husbands...even some children. Others made a decison to learn because they knew someone whom had been a victim, it took that to get them to take an interest. I had quite a few Geriatrics or ladies with physical limitations that precluded them from using a handgun.

I gave away a number of single shot shotguns to ladies, broke, scared, recovering from rape, abuse, going through or just divorced from a abusive situation...they had a right to defend themselves and kids...I provided a means with instruction.

2) Handguns. Even though I had many under 21 , the reasons mirror the Shotgun one above. Being over 21 meant getting a CCW.

I enjoyed teaching ladies and kids. Great students. I learned a lot from teaching them. My involment was by "Attraction" or "recommendation".

"Steve is sincere about ladies having the skills. Steve was NOT looking to hit on, take advantage of, or any other hidden agenda, not looking for dates. Fella ( me) really is respective and has a good time, taking it slow and easy and undertanding letting a guy get that close was a BIG deal for some after what some had been through. Oh you can tease , be yourself and he won't care as long as you are safe and all...kinda fun to embarass him..."

That parahrase was shared to me by another lady student. The student that said it ...I was surprised...was a lady I went to visit in the hospital on request by her sister. Raped, Beaten and in bad shape. I went to get her out of the hospital and into a unknown new place to live, the only single shot I had in the truck was a .410. We started with that as her HD for a few days. It took a bit with her sister always around - a male was not her favorite "thing" as one could understand. We worked through this, as she healed. A good used 1100 in 20 ga came next, then the Police trade-in model 10 , then the CCW.

Sometimes it was more difficult for me to assist than it was for her to shoot with the physical / emotional pain.

I wish that myth would die its well-deserved death.
Buzz, please forgive me. I know men get raped, too. The brother of one of my closest friends was gang-raped two decades ago, and never was quite the same person after that. He died of AIDS five years later ... an ugly, stupid, senseless tragedy that still makes me sad and angry every time I think of it.

My statement was simply a concise response to her assertion that guys like guns but girls don't. I like guns, and I'm a girl -- but that much was already obvious to her. I didn't have time to get into it with her (we did later), so instead I gave her a quick and simple one-liner she could chew over.

"He died of AIDS five years later"

Not to doubt the story, but that would put him on the *extreme* left side of the bell curve for HIV mortality... or was it five years ago, and not later?

mfree ~

It was early '80's, before a lot of the newer drugs had come out. And he already had a few other medical issues.

around here we gots fran,,,

fran has outshot all the local nra "expert" boys 2 months running in a local 600 match... (myself included)

i don't mind but she keeps winning all the $

then theres karen - she picked up her first gun ever a few months ago and started right in shooting at the expert level as well.

why are women naturally such good shots?

The prevailing theory around here is that they are much more gentle on the trigger pull.

oh, i thought this was gonnabe a women with guns PICS thread  :(

In my experience women shoot better in the begining for 3 reasons.
1. They usually don't have a lot of movie and TV crap to unlearn, so they actually listen to you.
2. Mentally they are more focused. Why do you think the really cute ones wear shorts to the line then put their shooting pants on. Its to distract the guys.
3. For shooting rifles they are better suited for kneeling and standing because of lower center of gravity and wider hips.

But coaching women has its own problems. Like starting them off with a .22 and spending 10 minutes telling them there is minimal recoil and they want you to pull the trigger for the first shot because they are afraid of the recoil. Gymnast and horse ridders present their own set of problems also.

I started with .357. It depends on the person. My husband started on a .22. I will say most girls do have trouble pulling the trigger cause they are scared of recoil. I had a girl who had handled a .22 freak out when she shot a 9mm. She swept a whole group of us only cause she didn't know what to do with it and didn't want to drop it in the snow. It was kinda funny.

Here's a pic of a girl with a gun. Not quite the best, but that's all the better I can do.

There are a lot more women learning to shoot and lurking gun boards than people think!

I know quite a few women between 30 and 50 who have developed an interest in firearms over the past few years. I personally think the reason for this is demographics.

More Boomer women were influenced by the media and by liberal politics. They got their information from the evening news and magazines. They just were told that guns are evil and so they believed it.

Jones and GenX women have more diverse politics and are more likely to get news from the Internet. They are also more likely to try something for themselves. This makes them more open to firearm ownership.

I have never been treated badly because I was a shooting gal! The few times I was treated badly, it was because the guy in question was a jerk with everyone.

Expect to see gun sales to women go way up. We are finally edging the more herd-minded Boomers out of way.

"Expect to see gun sales to women go way up. We are finally edging the more herd-minded Boomers out of way."

Some of the baby boomers are leaving the herd, my mom got her CCW at 55 yrs of age last fall. Now if I can find a gal as swell as my mother, I'd be a happy man.

Also when I took my CCW class, there were 3 women over 40 in the class.

When I start dating someone and in time I find out that they are repulsed by firearms and scared of the sight of a boxes of ammo in my bedroom closent (or spent shotguns shells on the floor of my pickup) the relationship doesn't last much after that. I guess that might explain why I am a 30 yr old bachelor.

I have been seeing more women at ranges and out while hunting, all I got to say is ladies keep it up! I can't wait for the day when I meet a gal and she says how about we meet at the range and I'll show you mine if you show me yours. :D

I've met Tamara a few times at RG&K and CCA in knox. I wouldn't hesitate to say that she knows more about firearms than myself and my buddies combined. I think it's great to find a woman that is willing to enjoy this great sport without the "I'm too prissy to do that" attitude when it comes to shooting.

Ahh you're one of those short wearing distractions. I'll grab one of positions far away from you for my own good.

Daughters with guns

I taught both my daughters how to shoot when they were twelve. They already knew the four rules, because I had taught them about safety when they were very young. My oldest was not the best shot (fliching with both the 9 and the .45) but she overcame it. Since I travel a lot on my job, I knew they had some protection when I was on the road. Now. my youngest is realistically a better shot than I am, but won't shoot compeditively. They have since moved out on their own; but when they turned 21, I bought each of them a Glock 17. When I go visit them, we go to a range and shoot as a family :D

I also took one of the ladies in my office to the range a couple of months ago, and she did well (we did a couple of hours of basic training before we went to the range since she had never held a pistol in her life). She has since asked to go again, as she want to learn more and is leaning toward buying a pistol for protection. :D

Hmm. I once got in a bit of a misunderstanding with some very angry military police. I managed to hold my own against the guys, until a very nice lady started beating me with her riot shield. I ended up with a concussion, cracked ribs, and a messed up leg. When women decide to be vicious, they can definitely be more vicious than any man.

:D (raises hand)
another female shooter here! I follow THR pretty well but don't post much, I only took this (expensive!) hobby up last year, and now have to say I am hooked, hooked, hooked.
I love semi-auto pistols, C & R rifles, have taken a few classes, could go to the range for HOURS on end. Even shot a couple rounds of trap with my mossy 590 20" 12 ga last fall. (that'll get you some looks)
If you see me at the range, come and say 'Hi', you can shoot mine if I can shoot yours! ;)
Nice to see a few of my sisters here...

Howdy, Wrench.

I've just started to shoot trap (well, done it once, loved it, going again next week.)

I need to find a good shotgun, but I'm waiting for something economical to come along or my kids to grow up. :)

LOL--I bought my first milsurp rifle in August, an SKS, because one of my friends has one and I enjoyed shooting it. Have since added a K-31, Turk mauser, Finn Mosin M-39, a Mosin 91/30 and an SAR-1. Next on the list a Swede mauser(or two), another Turk, oh my oh my!
Maybe a trip to Camp Perry in the spring? A real shotgun to shoot clay games with? Where will it end?
It's an expensive hobby, but I think, 'Hey! Therapy is expensive, too!'
It's all good.
