the guys from my hunting group are planning a guided hunt for trophy boar hog at a hunting reserve located on the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee

www.tennboar.com

I am trying to choose appropriate weaponry for this hunt;
for long gun, I have the following available:

1) Remington 700 SPS in .300 wsm w/ Nikon Buckmasters 4.5-14 x 40 (BDC) scope & muzzle brake installed shooting Winchester Super X 180gr pointed soft point

2) Mossberg 500 slugger in 12 ga w/ Bushnell Banner 2-7 x 36 scope & ported barrel shooting Lightfield Hybred EXP 2 3/4" 1 1/4 oz sabot slug

3) Savage 111G in .25-06 w/ Simmons Master Series ProHunter 6-21 x 44 scope shooting Remington 100gr CoreLokt softpoint

4) dad's Remington 760 Gamemaster in .30-06 w/ Bushnell Trophy 3-9 x 40 scope (see-thru mounts to allow use of iron sights) shooting Remington Managed Recoil 125gr CoreLokt softpoint

for handgun, I have the following available:

1) S&W 629 PowerPort (6.5" barrel) in .44 mag w/ open sights shooting Remington UMC 180gr semijacketed softpoint

2) Ruger Blackhawk (6.5" barrel) in .357 mag w/open sights shooting Federal Castcore 180gr flat-tipped hardened leadhead

3) Ruger Security Six (4" barrel) in .357 mag w/ open sights shooting Federal Castcore 180gr flat-tipped hardened leadhead

all the choices are within the guidelines for taking game on that ranch; what would you use; thanks

about how far is average range? if that is not a problem the 12 gauge and ruger blackhawk in .357. if range is a problem than the .300 wsm and ruger .357. but i like a 12 for hog.

i would use the .25-06 and the security six. Slim chances you are going to get in that close with a hog on a guided hunt and if you do i would want the most manuverable gun possible for the quick draw and that is likely the security six.

Only thing i dont like about the savage is starting at 6x on the scope. Depending on the terrain that might be a little bit to much magnification to start with.

There is not a gun in your list that wont get the job done. I might think about what is the lightest to carry as opposed to which will drop them the fastest.

That bunch will let you use a Sharp Stick, if you want to give it a try. Good Hunting, orchidhunter

Dont use a shotgun unless you are using slugs. I would go with the 300 WSM as my first choice with the second being the 25-06. I use my 7mm-08, 308 Win and 7mm Rem Mag with outstanding results. Mostly depends on what I loan my son as to what I use. Hog hunting is alot of fun, good luck.
