FFL Transfer $$$$
I understand that Gun Stores are in the business of making money. However at what point do you feel PAIN when transferring a firearm?
At what point would you consider getting your FFL?
ok so i read this whole thread and here is my 2 cents worth
i live in a very small town in the midwest
i got tired of getting treated like crap at the big town gun shop and how they knew more than i did and they knew what i wanted better than i did
so......
i got my OWN FFL !!
i started my own little part time gun shop no inventory of guns but i do carry some ammo and cleaning supplies and i do take a trade every now and again
my best customers are guys who dont want to go to the big city to get stuff
i usually try and get a group order to gether so we all can save on shipping
by the way i charge $25 over actual cost as my profit per gun(gun shipping & tax)
i charge $25 for transfers too. it costs here in illinois $2 a background check
so now i am making enough money selling and transfering guns to support my gun buying
just a different angle for some of you
I know EXACTLY how you feel. When I first started purchasing handguns I would go into the shop knowing EXACTLY what I wanted, and I would leave confused, and without a new gun.
I would then go home, get on the computer, and research the suggestions they made.
I now know to go on my own instinks when purchasing a weapon I am confident I want, and never turn back.
I understand a FFL needs to make a living. I know some that do it flat rate.
I also know of some that do it by percent. A 25$ fee for transferring a $135 CZ is a bit much. Makes the deal not such a deal. And a percentage transfer can also sour the deal. Some have asked for 10%, thats a good deal when transferring a Mosin but would really suck for say a $2400 Serbu. But it's a free market economy. I shop around and try to get the best deal if I have to.
For me I guess it would dependon the firearm being transferred. usually I'll pay 10% of the cost so it's not too bad. I can see it could get expensive though.
I was paying $25 and driving 25 min. but found a local guy through the directory on Gun Broker and now I only pay $10 and go a block out of my way on the ride home for work.
$25, if for no other reason than there are more than a dozen FFLs within 30mins of my house, not counting pawn shops.
That's what my friendly dealer would charge me, but so far he's managed to order anything I want for less than the Internet cost+shipping+transfer. Works out well for both of us.
I voted for "no more than 25" as that would be my preference. Unfortunately the only game in town here is $40 transfers, and an FFL that's awfully picky about what he transfers even for that. ( I.E. If he can get it and sell it from his shop, he won't do the transfer ). I'd love to say he lost me as a customer , but it's him or Gander Mtn., and that's all the choices I've got unless I want to make a ridiculous # of trips back and forth to somewhere further (with New York policies on buying and picking up and such )
I voted $50, because it costs that much already IF you can find an FFL to do a transfer around here (places like Turners most of the time won't do an out of state transfer either). DROS is $35 already on top of that.
