Yep, after 3 failed attempts at design or execution over several months, I finished the scales for my Becker BK 11 necker. Comfortable and pretty. Almost out of my "tiger oak", moving on to horn, bone, or micata next.

I also finished the knife I promised Cyndi, Last summer.

(Tried internal pins and expoxy. I like the smooth look)

Nice job, Bikerdoc! I especially like Cyndi's knife.... Like you said, nice and clean.

Not a big fan of the blades themselves (Nothing wrong with them, just not my style) but those scales are sexy as hell.

Looking good Doc!

Be sure to get a respirator before monkeying with micarta. That stuff can be bad ju-ju if you breathe too much of it. Desert Ironwood will put a hurtin' on ya too.

Thanks guys.

Yes on the respirator.

Picked up some long horns at the flea market and they slabbed out OK. Time will tell they are going on a old file. got to finish the three on the bench first, or maybe not. I go with whatever comes to mind, not very efficient but oh so much fun.

How'd ya like the smell of those horns when you cut 'em? I've done an antler handle and they have a rather memorable smell when you sand them on a belt. Like burnt hair :barf:.

I've been on the hunt for some scrap carbon fiber for a project I've been slacking on.

If you get a chance to work with Corian, do it. the stuff sands like butter and polishes up great. You can get scrap Corian on ebay cheap. Give it a try.

Stacked leather is on my to-do list. I have a custom hatchet that needs a companion and I'm having a hard time finding a knife to match. I hope make one myself before winter is over.

Keep up the good work Doc. I'll be watching for your next one.

Chris

Bikedoc, Texas Knifemaker Supply has some nice blades with hidden tangs that would fit the bill for a stacked leather washer handled knife. Check them out. I am impressed by your work. Keep it coming!

You can get scrap Corian from counter top shops. Usually they'll just let you paw through the scrap pile and take what you want for free (at least they do around here).

It's much easier to develop a relationship with them than dumpster diving for scrap.;)

Warning: For everyone that uses a grinder or does lots of glue layup, or superglues paracord, try to do this with more ventilation than you think is needed. If you have a shop dust/mist collection system, GREAT!. If you don't improvise with a shop vac and connect a second hose on the exhaust side to duct the air out of your work area. Make a card board or sheet metal cowling to help catch/pull the dust/fume and keep it pulling the whole time you're working. A respirator is ok, but removing the dust/fume before it fills your breathing space is better.

A note on respirators. Take good care of your respirator. I can't tell you the number of shops of smart, highly skilled knifemakers that I've seen respirators just hanging up or sitting on a shelf collecting all manner of dust. Make sure your filters are appropriate for what you're working with. Take your filters off and wash your facepiece and then dry it and put it in a air tight container when you're through with it. Some folks wrap the filters in saran wrap and just wipe the respirator out. That's not as good as disassembly and washing it, but it's better than leaving it out and letting it fill up with fly poop and kitty litter.

You got two eyes, two lungs and two ears, but that doesn't mean one's a spare.
