Finally broke down and bought an AR, which just arrived last night.I ook advantage of the line of credit with Bud's Gun Shop and got a Bushmaster M4 A3 "Patrolman's" Carbine. 16" bbl, chrome lined bore and chamber, 6 position stock, dual apeature A2 sights, removeable carry handle, sweet looking manganese phosphate coating all over, and 5.56 NATO chamber (only matters so I dont have to worry about the whole 5.56 mil-spec ammo in a 223 Rem chamber debate issues).Only weighs 6.7 lbs empty! I cant beleive how light this thing is! Also, I thought my AK was short, this is even shorter, and fits me great (I'm only 5'5", so not much really fits me that great normally).I'm also really amazed at how fast field stripping is.Reminds me of stripping a 1911 in terms of speed as simplicity.I can TOTALLY see why people love AR's and heap so much praise on them for their ergonomics, versatility, user-friendlyness.Also, the fit and finish is REALLY nice.I'm EXTREMELY happy with my choice on this gun so far. Now, if it shoots as good as it looks, I'll be a full AR convert (not tht I'll be dumping my AK, it has it's place and role too).Hopefully my Guatamalan surplus ammo shows up soon, and it finally stops raing here,so I can try it out.Once I do, I'll update this to give my opinion of accuracy, reliability, etc.Anywho, I'mreally happy, and just wanted to share.:D Here's a pic (it looks much better in person, my photo skills suck, and I had just oiled it up good, so..).Also, here' a link to the specs/write up on this gun for anyone interested. http://www.bushmaster.com/catalog_xm15_BCWA3F16M4.asp

Why someone has to come along and dog ya because you didn't buy thier brand just amazes me.
Congrats! Good choice. Uh, by the way, you got finger prints at the front of the magwell.
Feed it good ammo from good mags and keep it properly lubed and it will run flawlessly for a good long time.

nice purchase, enjoy.. now you will go bankrupt buying accessories for it ! I've been shooting alot of Guatamalan mil surp though my AR as well and it has functioned flawlessly with that ammo. Where did you buy the ammo ? I usually get my .223 from aimsurplus but havn't seen the Guatamalan stuff in a little while...

Yes it is a nice unit, or maybe not? But the question still remains:uhoh:
I am curious as to the advantage of it.

Same with a question of: Someone who just bought a Glock, then asked why did you buy it instead of the xd??? Legitimate question.

I have many rifles and pistols and shotguns and many brands. I can not own the one he is showing, but I can own a Kel Tec in the CA model.:p So maybe you can explain it to me since you want to "diss" me over it mc223.

I have read several pros and cons and why someone would pay a high price for something and mention it in comparison to the AK they already have. This is a good point also:If you go to AR15.com, "joining the dark side" means getting an AK not an AR or there is always this side of the mention: 223 sucks compared to the 7.62x39...

Not the situation at all.

http://archives.cnn.com/2002/US/South/10/24/sniper.bushmaster.rifle/index.html

So how about this article and the Kel Tec for comparison since they are similar in price at one time ;)

Plus your comment about the finger prints on the mag well speaks for its-self:p

I ook advantage of the line of credit with Bud's Gun Shop

don't make a habit of that :)

Bushmaster M4 A3 "Patrolman's" Carbine. 16" bbl, chrome lined bore and chamber, 6 position stock, dual apeature A2 sights, removeable carry handle, sweet looking manganese phosphate coating all over, and 5.56 NATO chamber

nice choice, rock on

(not tht I'll be dumping my AK, it has it's place and role too)

my money says the more you shoot the ar, the smaller that AK role gets :)

Hopefully m Guatamalan surplus ammo shows up soon,

don't hold your breath :(

pfff, everybody knows only HK makes real rifles :p get a G3(clone)
(disclaimer: the above is meant in a JOKING manner!!!)

nice rifle btw

;)Justin1974--impactguns.com has it for $7.99 per 30rds.Thats the cheapest I've found it, and is whereI ordered mine from.

Harley Quinn--I have no idea what the SU-16 is like in comparasin.Never even seen one.The reason I got the AR is that I have handled them and like the feel, there's TONS of acessories availale, they can easily be tweaked and modedd to however you want and you can swap uppers to a new caliber if wanted. Also, I just dont like the looks of the Kel Tec, hich isnt as important as functonality, but it does matter some to me.Also havent heard anywhere NEAR as much praise for the kel tec as the AR, so I felt more confident getting an AR.Also, I dont know of anything the kel tec can do my AR can't (except the folding stock thing, which I have 0 interest in anyway), so I went with what I KNEW could do eveything I wanted (even if what I wanted it to do changed in the future), looked better, and had more confidence in.To me, that all adds up to some pretty good reaons to get one over the other...

mc223-fear not, I spotted the fingerprints when I saw the pic. They have been taken care of.;) Since all I can do is look at it for now, it needs to look GOOD.:D

The Kel-Tec is a plinker. I'll put my AR up against anyones Kel-Tec in a durability test. Loser buys the ammo.

thanks for the heads up on that one jrFoxx.
I don't mean to HiJack your thread, but unfortunately impactguns.com is "out of stock" on the Guatamalan mil surp.

has anyone tried ;

55g FMJ 223 (5.56 NATO) 3200 FPS. HSM produces quality reloads for the commercial and law enforcement market

with .223 ammo being so expensive lately is this reload ammo any good?

Harley Quinn. Get out of Kali before they micro-stamp your forehead. If you want to know about Kel-Tec, Start your own theread or use the search function.
Curious as to how this compares to a Kel Tec that is half the price?

In my opinion there is no comparison.

Its like saying "Why would you buy an orange when you can get an apple at half the price"

Personally I don't like apples :D

We're told lately that "real AR-15s are made by Colt, not Bushmaster or whoever", whatever the hell that means.

Bushmaster makes a nice gun, without forcing you to pay for all the legacy costs of its union. Enjoy your rifle and don't let those addicted to overpriced rifles made by a company that hates the civilian market and has spotty quality control get you down. And I'm not talking about H&K. Their quality control is pretty good.

Maybe because the Kel Tec isn't an AR?

I kinda randomly looked and I was amazed to find that the aftermarket parts availability was substantially less for the Kel Tec than the AR.

Maybe my Google is broken........

jrfoxx,
Thanks for the explanation.

mc223
Well since I was born in CA and have been here 64 of my 66 years. I'll just stay, all the fuss and bother to move might lead to my demise:eek: My 10 round mags are sitting around by the dozens:D

Mdl 49 FN reachs out pretty good and so do some of my other cals.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FN_Model_1949

I like my 30 carbines, I have one in 5.7 that is nice. But the ammo is not cheap.

Thanks for the advise, I'll take it and follow up on the various thoughts.
:)

The Kel-Tec is much newer with a more limited market. The Ar-15 is perhaps the most accessorized rifle in the world. It will take a lot to catch up to it.

To be fair, the Kel-Tec is a utility carbine, like the Mini-14. They were not designed for heavy sustained fire (although it can be argued that neither was the M-16). Nor are they designed for long range shooting, which the AR-15 most definitely is.

The SU-16 enjoys a benefit of being about the easiest semiauto in its class to pack and is pretty darned portable. But it's not in the same class as the AR-15, nor is it supposed to be.

Very nice rifle. It should serve you well.

If you haven't already, I suggest swinging by AR15.com and perusing the stickied threads in the various technical forums. It's the quick way to get up to speed on the technical aspects of the platform to keep it running smoothly.
