The CZ is incredibly comfortable; that, and I like metal guns.

If you MUST have plastic, the M&P seems the way to go for 9mm;
though, I'd say an XD .45 would be the best--the one I've shot had an amazing trigger for a plastic gun, and surprised me greatly in the performance.

choosing a semi auto...

after handling a bunch of pistols and firing quite a few in comparison I finally settled on a FNP-40 for my first 40 S&W pistol. I have small hands and the FN just felt better than the others. The 9mm of course is the same sized pistol. The FN's also come with three high capacity factory magazines. I'm unaware of any other pistol offering this bonus. The firearm is wonderfully simple. Very easy to break down to it's basic component parts in 15 seconds. I have yet to experience a single malfunction with mine despite experimenting with a number of different powders and lead bullets. I haven't found a down side to the pistol yet. I purchased mine through gunbroker.com from a dealer in Pennsylvania for $369 plus $20 shipping. The FNP's are polymer receivers with stainless steel uppers. The uppers (slides) are available with either blackened or brushed stainless finishes. The brushed stainless finish models run about $30 more. Good luck with whatever you choose. Almost forgot, if you didn't know, the FNP's are nothing more than the old Browning Pro 9 and Pro 40 pistols with a different name stamped on the slide. FN is the largest firearms manufacturer in the world and owns Browning, Winchester, and numerous other companies....

Posts: 16 Anything but the XD. It fits terribly in my hand and I hate how it feels. I would never buy one. I haven't shot it though so if you like the way it feels go for it.

I love that post. I like to read it over and over and laugh every time. It's always so entertaining to hear someone slam a gun so bad, say they'd NEVER buy one and then they say they've never shot it.:scrutiny:

From that list, I would go for the CZ. CZ really put a lot of thought into the P01. The P01 has received great feedback and reviews. I think it's real winner.

Don't overthink the decision too much. There have been plenty of guns I thought I'd like based on what I've read about them, but once I handled them in person and shot them I discovered that I liked them more "on paper" then I did on the range.

There have been other guns that I didn't think I'd like, until I tried them.

Narrow it down a bit and then try to shoot your top three choices. You may find that one gun just feels that much better to you then the others. That's the one to buy, no matter what your decision would be based on the "on paper" stats.

Once I've narrowed it down to 2 or 3 pistols, I'll definitely shoot them and decide from there. The selection of autoloaders is massive, though. From the poll, it looks like I should check out the P-01, the M&P, and the XD.

Overall, did I leave any pistols out in my comparson?

Just keep in mind that the number of votes in a poll that you get for each gun is partially a function of how many people have handled the gun.

Relatively rarer guns will automatically get fewer votes for that reason alone (I'm especially thinking of the Steyr M9-A1 when I say that...).

I agree with all who recommend that you handle the guns, shoot them if possible, and pick the one that you shoot best...

(For example, I had a very positive image in my mind of the CZ P-01 until I actually handled one. I wasn't as impressed with the worlmanship as I thought that I'd be from handling, and owning, several other CZs. Flats were not quite as flat as I'd like, I really didn't like the epoxy paint (or whatever it is) finish, and the gun didn't feel that good in my hand. It wasn't bad, but it just didn't trip my switches. And I'm not trying to badmouth the CZ P-01 here either, because I still think that it's a good gun. I have a friend who just picked one up and he loves the P-01. Such things are very personal and subjective.)

Good luck in your quest...

Forrest

If you get the Steyr let us know what you think of it. My dad's been wanting to get one. I always tell him, much like others mention, just get a Glock 19 and be done with it. It's simple and it works.

CZ and GLOCK make some of the BEST handguns out there! The great thing about CZ is you can get a .22 conversion kit straight from the factory.

My vote was CZ.... I own a P-01 and it is trying to multiply!

Couple of thoughts

...

Of the guns you have listed, I would go with CZ for several reasons.

Built like tanks, solid, accurate out of the box, alittle sharp around some of the edges but, they're made to work, in that, they're heavier than a lot of others listed, as well as the springs for the slide and hammer will give you a good work-out that will build up many minor motor-muscles that have been off-line or, yet to be discovered.

The only last thing is, do you want a gun with a "hammer" or a hammer-less gun, along with, DA/SA, SA only, DA only, with a safety-decocker in one, or just with a safety, or with decocker only?

Also, IMHO, you should see how, and where, the saftey-decocker or, decocker only, is, in relationship to its use, while maintaining a good 2-hand grip. KEY!! IMO.

Will you feel comfy with one in the chamber, no hammer, but locked and cocked, safety release hold-down, or click to off, to shoot. Or, would you rather have one in the chamber, but with the "hammer" down, in DA mode, either requiring a fast DA trigger pull-thru, or a quick manual thumb-cocking of the hammer to put your gun into SA mode, along with that nice unmistakable "CLICK" that can be heard, and will, set a "tone" as to your intentions to the observing party, that the next sound will not be good.

Does the gun come with real "Night Sights" that glow all night long, bright or, just glow sights that need light to make them glow for 20 mins max on a good charge? Real Night Sights are very useful, when needed, to know where the front muzzle of your gun is pointing in the dark, along with, they're much better from the factory, set right, accurate, than getting them put on later, along with, not getting your gun whacked and scratched by the gunsmith with thick glasses, and short temper and, in a rush. Trust me on that one, after you've waited for your gun for 2 weeks, or more, to see your gun abused, scratched, and the sights are off (obvisouly in my case) and not accurate to boot.

Figure that out, and you'll be real close to your gun of choice IMO.

I think your right, If I can decide on those things, my choice will be easier. The problem is, I don't really have a preference. Maybe a little more shooting and handling of the guns will help me choose those things.

...

Ok, I always did want to have DA/SA, and with a Hammer, for what I explained above. Also, I'm fortunate, with age, sigh, but Money was not part of my buying equation, rather, how each gun felt in my hands naturally and, the point to aim, weight and balance, with that movement.

My first gun, the Beretta Px4 40, was 300 + dollars less than the Sig Models and it did have a "safety-decocker" which, for my first gun, I wanted. But, now I like the Sigs decocker-only, as I mentioned above, being able to use, without sacrificing a good 2-hand grip, and no safety period.

But, my Beretta 40cal came with factory night glow sights, that as I said above, hit them with a flashlight, or table lamb light, and they glowed for 20 mins on a good night.. lol

And I bought really good, real Night Sights, but payed the price, as I mentioned, also, above. But, all my guns are "working guns" and in time, that gun can be refinished to perfection and then I can be the one to put the first scratch on her.. ;)

But, if you're on a budget then, you want the most Bang out of, and for, your buck, and CZ is IMHO, got the best full package. But, I really don't recall if they offered real Night Sights, but that can be semi-negotiated IMO, if CZ's come with them, a/o, without them, from the factory and, as a rule of thumb, usually cost 100 bucks more for them from the factory.

Best of luck in your hunt for your gun..

If your budget was a little higher, I'd recommend the HK P2000 hands-down.

Out of all the guns you listed, I'd recommend the FNP-9, though in the "M" variant (FNP-9M). It's a very sweet firearm. CZ P-01 after that.

i say goxd and it looks like a bunch of others agree, besu\ides from them being outstanding handguns, great shooters, reliable and such, they are backed by a great company they will srve you well, and now more and more there are additional aftermarket stuff comming out for them, so what ever it is you could want to put or use with the xd is now possible. i have 2 and i love em. both in .40 cal.

For $500, I'd also add a used or CPO Sig P229 or P228 to the list....and then I'd eliminate all the others on the list.

yep, Sig, I'd look at a P220 though

mmmm. those pierogies look yummy!

i voted for the steyr, because you eliminated glocks from your list. why? i have no idea. they're wonderful guns.

have you held these guns? which feels right to you? have you decided how you will carry. are all of these possible for you?

have you considered what action type you are looking for? for me, that's my first consideration. i do not want a gun with an upside down safety or decocker-thingy. i want single action 1911 or striker-fired dao.

the taurus millenium pro pt 111 may suit your tastes as well. but, having fired lots of different guns, glocks are my personal favorite.

I had an XD9 as my carry gun for 3 years up until Friday when I bought my XD45. I loved my 9 & only retired it for a bigger caliber. So I voted XD. I would buy a .40 or .45, but the 9 is an excellent choice as well.
