So after researching shotguns off and on for six months I finally pulled the trigger so to speak and ordered a Mossberg 500 combo. It has the walnut stocks and an 18" and 28" barrel. Shipped it was $287 to my FFL. I was torn between the 500 and 870, but every 500 I picked up felt good to me, and the price seemed right so I did it. This is my first shotgun since I was 10 - or in the last 25 years so I'm uber excited. It's primary roll will be HD, with the occasional skeet or trap thrown in.

I wanted to thank everyone that posts on this forum. I've read countless threads from doing searches and feel I made a better decision as a result of the knowledge learned from this forum.

I plan on upgrading the safety to metal (probably an oversized vang comp safety), adding a side saddle, a light, and that's pretty much it. Oh, and then tons of shooting! :D

Congrats on the mossy. You'll enjoy it. Shoot it often and have fun.
Personally I wouldn't worry about adding anything to it until your comfortable with it. If I had to add anything to a shotty for HD it would be a flashlight and thats it. No need for all the tacticool stuff unless your an LEO or a mallninja.JMHO

I got the combo not to long ago and I love it. I even considered getting a 500 with wood furniture and a 28" barrel and chopping one of my barrels down to 20". I would love to have two shotguns.

My most favorite gun is my Mossberg 500 Persuader with a 20" barrel but if I had it to do over again I'd get the combo with the same barrels as yours. I think I'll probably get a metal safety for mine, too.

Excellent choice. I went with the 28"/24" rifled barrel combo, then picked up a rifle sighted 18.5" for HD.

I was out shooting slugs and buckshot the other day.

In the short smoothbore Federal low recoil Truball slugs were amazing. I was shooting offhand, so the group sizes weren't anything to brag about, but each shot was going exactly where I called it.

The rifled barrel seemed to not have a preference between the brands I tried, but the Hornady SST is going to be my pick, I think. Seems to not kick quite as hard, and shoots flatter.

I have had a Mossberg 500 since 1977.
I have used it for small game, ducks, deer, skeet and tactical training ever since.
It was also my trunk gun when I worked second security jobs in dark and lonely locations.
I have tried others..Ithaca 37, Nova, 870..but nothing fits me better then the current one that was bought in 1986.
A wise choice.

Have owned & operated a Maverick 88 since 1990. Put just as much game on the table as my brothers with their higher-priced 870/1100 Remmys. (That really torques 'em off.....my $106 Maverick by Mossberg works well).

Nothing wrong with Remingtons, the Mossy/Maverick 'Fits' me better.

Got a couple of Bambis in ther freezer, too. I recently restored my late father-in-laws OLD Mossy 500. Goes BOOM! on request every time, too...and puts the lead where I point.

Tons of shooting, eh? Go ahead....just try to wear it out. My wager is that you can't. Maybe your 2nd or third generation of grandkids can...

Congrats! The 500 is a fine gun.

Shoot it often. Keep it clean and it will last you the rest of your life.

I bought the same combo earlier this year. I paid about $40 more for mine, but I couldn't be happier with it. As others have said, have fun trying to wear it out. :)

I just thought I would warn you that it can be pretty addictive. I went to a friends land and put 30 rounds of bird through the 28" barrel. Let it cool down and put almost as much buck through the short barrel. Tonight I spent $100 on more ammo and side mount shell holder.

P.S. Expect a PM from me.

i can break 22 or 23 out of 25 all day long with my 500, its a GREAT gun. all the old guys with the $3000 over unders give me weird looks, its great.

I bought my 500 about 10 years ago and have put 1000's upon 1000's shells through it. It is starting to have a FTE once in awhile though.
Shooting clay pidgins with it is a hoot.

It is a Butler Creek grip & stock.
I installed the grip & stock right after I bought it. I like it.

Mossy 18.5" 500A Persuader is my HANDS DOWN favorite shotgun. Controls placement and out of the way lifter position (for topping off the mag) make the Mossberg tops in my view. Reliability, of course, is a given!

I bought a Sears/Roebuck branded Mossburg 500 back in 1976. It had a 28" modified barrel, and a smoothbore 24" rifle sight slug barrel. I don't think I've ever fired a shell through the slug barrel, but more than a few deer have fallen to a 3" load of Remington Number 1 buckshot out of the modified barrel.

I think the combo sold new for $129.00 at Sears in those days, but I got it "used" for $99.00. Seems a fellow had bought it, took it home, pattered the slug barrel with buckshot, didn't like it and bought it back to Sears and exchanged it. That was a long time ago. Things were different. The price you said you paid, is probably releativly speaking cheaper than what I paid "back in the day." I assure you, that $99.00 was a LOT of money to me back then. :D

The gun is just as good today as it ever was.
