I'm interested in finding a job in the firearms industry. I’m currently a sophomore in college heading towards a general business degree. I was wondering if you guys had advice on directions to head towards that would make it easier to find a job within the firearms industry. I understand this is a somewhat vague question as the firearms industry is huge but that’s why I am asking this question.

That's my dream too pal. I'm going for mechanical engineering right now, hoping I can get my foot in the door somewhere eventually... What is it you wish to do in the industry?

Also, 100th post!

Find a manufacturer near you and call them. I have found that the HR department is usually very willing to talk to people about how to get jobs there. HR is afterall responsable for recruiting.

I tried for a long time with no luck, of course, my background is in writing (English major here). I do have a little freelance work lined up for an online gun magazine.

Here's a link that you may want to keep on your radar http://www.nssf.org/jobs/
I was an English major too, and it's a tough market.
There are a lot of tech writers out there in places like India working for nothing. And, there are a lot of unemployed with years of experience in lean manufacturing and ISO processes applying to anyone and everyone.
So, your work is cut out for you.
I'd try to get an internship. Figure out which manufacturer is your dream company and then make a secondary and tertiary tier of choices to whom you would apply.
It also can't be said enough that you need to network and press the flesh. Go to the SHOT show, if you can afford it, and get to know some people in the industry. Get their cards, make an impression, and stay in touch by e-mail or social media and even hand write them letters (a very big deal nowadays).
My dream gig is to work for a large company like Ruger, or Honda's North American motorcycle division. 10 years after college, and I'm still beating on the doors trying to get my foot in just a bit.
My wife works in HR for a very big health care firm. Taking tips from her has been a big help for me in pursuit of a dream position in firearms. I'm not there yet, but I'm now using more successful methods to get and keep attention of significant people in key organizations.

Thanks for the reply guys. As far as what I would want to do in the industry, I'm not really sure. As long as it was within the firearms industry or had something to do with guns I would be more than happy to do it. Also, thanks for the advice on contacting the HR branches. I'm located in Missouri so I've been doing some research on Sierra Bullets. They have been located in Missouri for around 20 years and seem to be a well known name. I just haven't got around to contacting them and talking with someone.

I have friends that work at Thompson Center Arms and I talked to a woman that works a SIG Sauer. Gonna try and get a job at SIG (No college just be 18 and graduate from HS) and if that doesn't work than I'm gonna try and get a job at TC. Its reachable plus the employee discounts are really motivating to get a job at either.

Sig did a lot of hiring last year but right now they are in a slowdown. Unless you have some CNC skills, most of the work is simple assembly or warehouse work. The hours are not 8 to 5. They can and do work seven days a week and overtime isn't optional. Do produce and you're gone. Pay is ok but not great.
