A simple rule to live by. Fortunately no one was injured but a long career in law enforcement is likely over:

The officer is a 21 year veteran of the St Louis Metropolitan Police Department. I’d be interested to know what kind of weapon he was carrying. Last I heard the issue weapon was a DAO Beretta Auto. But the officer was off duty at the time.

Des Peres Director of Public Safety Eric Hall said the officer told investigators that he saw the suspects reaching in their pockets as they were running, and he wasn't sure whether they were reaching for their car keys or a weapon. So, he drew his weapon, but kept it at his side while yelling commands at them to stop fleeing.
The officer said he heard the engine rev loudly as they disregarded his orders, but they did not have the car in gear. The sound of the engine startled the officer, causing him to squeeze his trigger accidentally. Hall said the officer's shot hit the ground because he still had his weapon pointed down.
Des Peres police found evidence in the parking garage that supported the officer's version of events, including an indentation on the pavement where the bullet hit, Hall said.
