I have a Maverick 88 and will be using it for deer hunting this year, I have searched but decided to ask those that have done it, what is the best finish for the money to put on a shotgun to prevent rust? I can't afford a custom job so I will be doing it myself, just want something that will be resistant to oil that I will use on the moving parts of course and that it will last for a while. I just got done cleaning my gun after shooting and found light rust on the takedown bolt for the barrel. I am such a rust phobic that I clean after every shooting or once a week when I don't shoot. But it seems like the rust bug finds me no matter how much I clean. I even use a dehumidifier in the small closet where I have my safe. I just don't understand the bluing on guns today, I have owned guns for 40 years and back when I was young never had one to rust as fast as my Maverick 88 today. I have even seen unboxing of 88's and other low cost guns on YouTube that had rust right out of the box. I guess even on a fixed income I am gonna have to save for something with a better finish. Thanks.

They have rattle can type cerakote finishes that can be fairly easily done at home without alot of equipment. Ive used brownells alumihyde on a few of my old single shot shotties that was a little to worn for a reblue and it has worked fine. There air dry type spray finishes now as well as some you can spray and stick in your kitchen oven. But if your married man you may want to consult the mrs before bakin gun parts in the oven. I agree about the finishes on modern firearms aint what they used to be. A buddy bought a new remington 870 about 7 years ago and within days of him getting it the barrel had a good coat of surface rust.

Renaissance wax... or any hard carnauba wax you can find at the auto parts store. (Avoid waxes that "clean"... they are abrasive.)
