Hi,

yesterday at the trap range, I was standing next to a man with a Maverick 88 and I had a Mossberg 500 Field. His gun was all rusted along the barrel and receiver, and I asked if he hunted and he said "No, I just shoot clays and I store it in a dehumidified room, so !?"

I looked at my Mossberg, which I clean every time out and oil it, not rust yet. However, I did notice in the sun yesterday that there were small specs of rust under the rib. I own a mossberg 500 receiver, but maverick (non-ported) 28" accu-choke barrel.

Do I need to be careful with the lower quality Maverick barrel?

Btw, I shot the best at that round of trap compared to the Beretta O/U, AL391, and custom trap O/U's with raised ribs.

If his was rusted, it was his fault, not the gun's.

There's no functional diff in those barrels. Hot blue is hot blue. Just keep yours clean and oiled and you'll have no probs.

I agree, it was his fault. I have had a maverick for about 7 years. It's my abuse/home defense shotgun. It's been rained on. Not a single spot of rust on it, probably because I clean it after I use it.

You say there was rust on the receiver. This isn't possible since the receivers are aluminum. Are you sure he had a Mossberg?

Arent' they aluminum alloy?

Technically yes.

Technically a penny is made out of 97% zinc and copper plated everyone still says its copper though.

You would be hard pressed to find any product constructed of any pure elemental metal.

Yes, they are aluminum alloy. But iron is not present in that alloy. No iron, no rust. Aluminum does oxidize but the oxide is quite durable.
