I have a maverick 88 and am thinking about a heat shield. I found one for cheap(ATI) brand but many people say its hard to get on and doesn't stay tight. Does anyone have one on there 88, or have any opinions? The price seems tgtbt.

I have a Mossberg heatshield on mine I got from Midway, fits fine. Costs about $30 if I remember correctly.

All of the accessories for the Mossberg 500 fit the Maverick 88.

Spend the money on ammo instead, and shoot the shotgun - don't just look at it . Your ability to shoot the gun well under pressure is far more important than how it looks, unless you only use it as a range toy.

If that's the case, the Mossberg offering is a better choice, and as has been mentioned, will fit the 88 with no problems.

I had an ATI shield on a 500 that was given to me (shield not the shotgun) Now I know why it was free! On the first range trip it was sliding with recoil. So bad that it got where the slide wouldn't function. It ended up being thrown downrange becoming the next target. I don't have experience with the Mossberg variant so I can't comment on that.

For what it's worth, the heat shield on my 590 has proven to be a valuable safety device. Over the course of shooting hundreds of shells in rapid succession (during informal clay shooting), the barrel gets VERY hot, and the heat shield keeps people from burning their hands on it. In my experience, it's not just an aesthetic addition.
