The other year I was offered a very sad S&W .38 Single Action 2nd Model. A buddy of mine on another forum has one he had done up years ago, and I've always admired it. I decided to do my own version.

Cut-and-crowned at 1-5/8", new bronze front sight, what little nickle there was got stripped, then I rust blued the gun. To top it off I made a pair of elk antler grips. It's a good little gun; locks up like a bank vault, no side or end-play. Trigger is heavy but crisp, and the gun is quite accurate at 7-10 yards.

I plan on using it for extra-discreet carry, or as a back-up.

I like it. Side note, how do you go about removing the nickel finish?
Abrasives. Time consuming work, but the result is worth it.

Yes, this is a .38 S&W; I will be using the same load I use in my Safety Hammerless. I've put over a thousand rounds of this load through it with no issues. In fact I've put over three thousand rounds through that gun, most in the same range as the current load and it's handled them just fine. That load is:

160gr. LSWC, 2.7gr. Unique, CCI500 primer

1-5/8″ barrel: 722 fps. 185 ft./lbs

Mind you S&Ws are much higher quality than most of the American-made top-breaks; I wouldn't expect similar performance from an H&R or even an IJ. I shoot lighter loads in those guns.

Most excellent. Anachronism (some might disparagingly say junk), updated and cleaned up and made into something useful and beautiful. The finish and the grips are beautiful, and I especially like that fact that you've developed a useful load for it with about .380 ballistics except with "revolver" bullets and you have practical use for it.

You're certainly walking the path less traveled... most people would just run out and buy an LCP or whatever. I've done that myself, in fact, and there was no fun in it at all. Just more tupperware.
