I have a few I rarely shoot, but I'm not selling any more guns. I have made to many mistakes selling something I didn;t shoot much and totally regretted selling it later. A few examples are,

My Colt Dimondback
My first Springfield Champion that I had customized
my Bushmaster A2
Taurus PT58 .380
Winchester 1894 Teddy Roosevelt Commerative, never fired since new
my first Walther PPKs, and the PPK
my totally tricked out 870.
my sweet totally tricked out M1991A1 Colt
and my original Colt Gold Cup ser 70

I have quite a few guns I dont shoot.....some I have never shot.

Some I keep for history....such as K98 Mausers and K31s.

The ones that dont have history can be sold to fund another gun I want more at any time. I try not to do it but if I decided its new gun time I may pull an undesirable (to me) piece out of my collection and part with it.

Last time it was a post-war Walther PP .32acp jam-o-matic. Didnt regret it for a minute.

Just 1 that I don't shoot much....an RG-38. A snubby .38Spl, was my late Father-In-Law's "bedside table companion".

And I don't shoot snubbies/Rodent Weapons very well. Got a shooting buddy with a Bersa Thunder .380. I like the feel of the Bersa, but at more than muzzle-contact distance, you would more likely get hit if I threw it at you than if I shot at you.

I was just the same as Sniper X. Sold a pretty long list of distinquished guns funding or trading up to others. I have regreted it more than once. My battery is evenly represented, at least one gun for every occassion and a quality gun at that. Some get shot more than others and a few a just sentimental pieces. I really like the statement about lack of range time, "Preaching to the choir brother". :)

Don't have that many guns and tend to shoot all I have though some more than others.

Jonesin' for a Stainless Steel Marlin 45-70 guide gun for no good reason at all and once I finally get it I doubt I'll shoot it much but still want one for some reason
:D

I have several guns that I rarely shoot. I thought I would never sell one until recently when I decided I wanted to by a new H&K but didn't want to come up with the whole $800.00 and pay my daughter's college tuition in the same month.

So, I sold a revolver I never shoot and added a bit of money to that sale.

Seems like a win-win to me! :)

Cheers,
ChickenHawk

IN MY HUMBLE OPINION...

Hey, Stinger, I gotta' disagree. I'm a collector and DO NOT SHOOT my little darlins, 'cause it only takes one little error to scrap a beautiful piece of history.

Thanks, but I'll lesve 'em in the house, where I can just sit and watch 'em increase in value. :) ---45Broomhandle

PICTURED BELOW: Fialas are my first love. Especially the 3-barrel, cased sets with detachable walnut buttstock. This photo shows the various configurations one can assemble with a set. Also a "Special Order" 12 1/2" bbl and a H-S Mdl. B, which is a relative.

Out of 3 gun safes full, I think I've only ever sold 4 or 5. If I end up not liking a gun it might get sold. Mostly I'm a bit of a hoarder and just hang on to them. Of the few I sold, I regret selling several of them enough to not want to repeat the mistake.

Agreed Plink!

I wish I had Plink's mind-set a few years back. I currently have two pistols that I really don't wish to keep. But, my thoughts of losing money to sell them is now just unacceptible.

I would rather keep them, than to lose the money. That fact that drove me to this point is when I bought a Kimber Custom Shop Prob Raptor 4" for $999.00 and sold it to Gander Mountain for $550 to $600 with the assurance that they would mark it up $150.00. Well, the next week there it was in the display counter advertised for $970.00! It sold that same day!

Between the thought of losing the money, and then seeing what can really happen to a used pistol price after they beat you down, I would rather keep it...whether I shoot it or not. Some day my daughter can decide if she wants to keep it.

Expensive lessons,

I went through the same thought process a couple of years back and ended up "purging" anything that I did not shoot AND was easily replaceable. Thus the beretta's, glocks, springfields etc all got sold. I kept the ones I shot a lot, the collectable pieces and guns I just enjoy owning. I mean really, everyone needs to own an Automag right?

I have an original Civil War era Sharps Carbine 50-70 that I never shot. I do have two bullets. I feel kind of like Barney Fife with that one. I also have a Colt New Model Police .36 original black powder revolver from the mid 1800's and never shot it either. It has all matching SN's and good condition. Don't even have percussion caps, powder, patches or lead balls for it. I do have a .375 H&H magnum that I shoot for no real good reason and that will probably result in shoulder joint problems when I am old(er).

Why would you sell guns if your safe is getting full when you can easily buy another safe? Okay, so MAYBE it would be alright to sell off a few guns to buy another safe to start filling.

Some of the collection never goes to the range because of their value. Most make an occasional trip to the range. I have the regulars that go to the range because they need to be shot to keep up on the proficiency. It is fun to open the safe before a range trip and find something else fun to take along that I haven't shot in awhile.

My philosophy is do what you like. Colt Pythons have been getting a lot of attention of late since Colt stopped making double action revolvers. Years ago, bought a Python and shot it. It was just another gun at the time; a nice gun, but just another gun. It sat around for a number of years as I bought and shot other guns, and I eventually sold it last year. I have no regrets. It was in very good condition, and I hope that someone else enjoys it.

Could I have eeked out another $50 or $100 if I had waited until this year?

Most of us start out as gun accumulators if you like firearms. You can only shoot so many as far as I'm concerned. I can't see buying a 50 year old gun that is NIB and just shooting it. If you want to shoot one like it, buy one that shows a bit of wear and enjoy the heck out of it. Leave the collector pieces for someone who enjoys that facet of the hobby.

With regard to quality firearms, eventually they may all be collector pieces to one degree or anther. So, when you put that S&W in your safe and don't shoot it, who knows in 20 years it may be worth a few more dollars? But you could have doubled your money easily in those 20 years if you had put the money in the bank.

I rarely shoot my .38 snub, I rarely carry it. Most of the time, when I do carry it, its loaded with shotshells. Junkyards appear to be snake magnets. A buddy of mine wants it, but doesnt have the money, when he does have the money, it gets spent elsewhere. At some point, he'll have something I want and we'll work out a trade. I think thats the only reason I still have it (and the snakes).

I forget I own a Para Companion untill I look in the safe, or see/hear one mentioned. It rusts really easily, so I'm planning on having it hardchromed. Someday. Till that day, it sits in the safe, wrapped up in a bod full of CLP.

I dont plan on selling either one of my semi-auto, thompsons, and theyre rarely taken to the range, but for good reason. Its not unusuall for me to go through several hundred rounds during a range session, and .45 aint cheap. I know, I should reload, and I plan to. Someday.

I traded my G17 in on a Series I kimber I've fired about 1000 rounds through, and its sat in the safe, unfired for about a year. Theres something up with the trigger, its, um, spongy. I'll have that fixed someday, but at the moment I'm more concerned with my AMT.

Yes, I bought an AMT hardballer. And yes, at the moment its a priorty over my spongy-triggered Kimber. I havent fired it in years. In the time I've had 1911s, I have lost a few pins, bushings and screws. Guess where I got replacements?

At the moment, my AMT is a slide, barrel, and a frame. Truth be told, I dont know where the barrel is. If I havent used the part in another 1911, I've lost it since I used the pin that held it in. Currently, I've got parts on the way to make the frame complete, and I'm gonna top it off with a .22 conversion. I've got a little girl on the way, so gotta have a pistol she can learn to shoot with. But first she's gonna learn how to shoot her great-grandfather's 10-22.

I have never sold a gun. I did trade a 454 casull for a 458 win mag rifle and even that was difficult, but it was too bulky to hunt with. Just can't bring myself to part with them.

I've sold quite a few guns over the years. Some of them were sold because I replaced them with something better. Others were impulse buys that I never should have made, though I've learned my lesson since.

My collection is refined to near perfection for me:

M1a
M1 Garand
Savage Mark 2 .22lr
Kel-Tec sub 2000 (Glock 9mm version)
Benelli 12 Ga.
Springfield GI 1911
Springfield Ultra Compact GI 1911
Springfield XD .45
Kel-Tec P-11

I shoot all of those guns and can't imagine ever wanting to sell them.

Hey Zspecter, remember the mantra.....

"It's not that we NEED another gun, it IS that we WANT another gun, and that's good enough for us!"

chant this ten times today and go buy that Guide Gun and feel free to blame it on me!

If I have no use for it, e.g., not fitting the niche I envisioned for it, or just plain don't like it for whatever reason, I sell it. If it has been good to me but has been eclipsed by newer technology, I keep it around unless somebody wants it way more than I do, i.e., paying me a lot more than I paid for it. That has yet to happen. ;)

I own guns to shoot and cars to drive. If that isn't happening, then they are gone. Plus, I'm a simplist. I don't want that clutter. Let 'em go to somebody else who can appreciate them for what they are. Speaking of which, I have a few that I need to unload.

I shoot pretty much everything. only thing that doesn't get shot is my .223 AK, but that is staying in the safe for when the zombies come. I have however sold a few that where impulse buys, and I never used.
