So I am on a tight budget but want something more than a 3x9 scope on my 308. I have been looking at the firefield 4x16x42 tactical scope. It seems decently made and and decently clear and it's under $100 I typically shoot 100-400 yards and want to see what I am shooting at. I will eventully move up to a vortex or Nikon but that's a ways out. anyone use one?

I've got one of their 1x6 FFP scopes ( http://www.opticsplanet.com/firefie...erproof-illuminated-1-6x30mm-rifle-scope.html ) on my Siaga .223 AK. Its held up well so far (maybe 800 rounds) but it'd have been better if they stopped at about 4.5X as clarity is pretty marginal at the highest powers. My other complaint is the reticle is very "thick" and blocks a lot of the target at the higher powers.

If you plan on doing a lot of shooting at the higher powers, I'd suggest finding one you can look through first to be sure its clarity is acceptable. I'm also leery of low end scopes on .308, but I sure do understanding wanting something you can afford now to use while you save up for what you really want.

I think on a tight budget a 3x9 might be a safer bet as these have been around a long time and don't push any design envelopes. You can often find low-end Leupoid or Redfield or Burris for a good bit under $200, and the Nikon Prostaff 3x9 is easy to find for ~$150 or less.

I've seen a lot of good reviews of the Centerpoint 4x16 scope from Walmart -- its rather large, but Walmart has good return policy should it break after a few outings.

yeah I have looked thru one at my local sportsmans warehouse clarity isn't bad for the price. I have shot a centerpoint 4-16 and the firefield is by far clearer and has way better eye relief. Idk how the waranty is on the firefield but they say limited lifetime.

Savage, have you looked into what that scope weighs?

The model says IR, but I don't think this is an Infrared night vision scope.

How big are your 400yd targets and their bullseyes?

it wieghs in at 26 oz according to their website, But my rifle is heavy anyway it's in a boyds thumbhole and has a what they call a lightwieght target barrel on it, but it's much heavier than a standard sporter barrel. I typically like to shoot at 12" targets at that distance. You are right it's not IR i don't know why they say that it's red/green illuminated.
