First .22 - Mark III or Single six?

You guys are too much into pinpoint accuracy and utility. The Single-Six is one of the most fun guns I've ever shot and it's built with craftsmanship that is rapidly vanishing in this industry. It also takes the potent .22 magnum, which really can be handy if you ever need to use it for hunting.

For plinking, you can't beat it!

Well its a tough to decide I have both. I bought my sigle six 20 years ago with both cylinders for $100. and its a 3 screw. I just picked up a 22/45 MII for $150 with 4 mags.
so shop around and you can finde good deals. as for loading and unloading once you get used to it you can do it fairly fast with the single six.

Confederate, you really need to stop posting pictures of your Single Six. Your pictures make my wallet squeal at me, :D plus if I bought a Single Six right now I'd be forced to live on nothing but Ramen until I graduate in a few months..... :uhoh: :p

One of my Ruger pistols is set up for pinpoint accuracy, but it's not utilitarian any more. I'll have to post pictures...

But a 22/45 is IMO more fun than a Single Six. And you really can't call someone who thinks that pouring black powder into a Remington New Model Army leverloader is a lot of fun, too much into pinpoint accuracy or utility...:)

I shoot smokeless single actions when I'm too lazy to clean black powder.:D

i have both also :) i use my mkII at the range alot and it has well over 20,000 rounds through it between; me, little brother, nephews, nieces, sister in-law, mom, and pretty much everyone else around! a ruger 22auto is kind of a "must have" and just fine fun on the range. i have the bull model 5" and even the younger/lady shooters dont have a problem with the weight. probably not any more accurate but i like the lines/balance better than the standard taper.

now the single six... i want to like it; and have the ~6-7" barrel a older model. i refinished it, completely stripped cleaned, fixed up the stocks, redid the aluminium everything. however i just dont like the balance. my 45 vaquero feels right but the .22 with all that extra metal in the cylinder etc. just doesnt feel right for me. but i want to like it!

I have a Ruger Mk I Bull Barrel that is over 40 years old.
I still have the box with a $54.00 price tag still attached.
Over the years, I shot AT LEAST 10,000 rounds thru the pistol, collected a ton of small game , including about 200 ground hogs.
The Ruger autos are of course a very good choice BUT try to buy a K-22 varient also.
Not long ago, I ran across a friend that had a vintage .22/.32 Kit Gun, in excellent shape for an obscenly low price.
I needed ANOTHER handgun like I need another AZZ but guess what??
I love the pistol dearly!

Our rabbits do this thing called "hopping" and they do it fast.

You'll eat more of them with a Mark III than with a Single Six.:D

Sometime they stop and sometimes they don't until they are well out of range or in cover. A good Beagle helps. Hunitng wabbits with a 22 is just plain fun and a bit of a challenge.

I really enjoy the "process" of loading, cocking, and unloading the single action Ruger. It actually adds to the enjoyment of my range sessions. There's just something about it that harkens back to the past, and I like handling the gun. I like the Ruger autos also, but ease and speed of firing isn't my primary concern.

In a complete contradiction of my post above, I bought a Ruger Mark III 22/45 today. I hate the looks of the "loaded chamber indicator", but otherwise I like the gun. It is a fun range plinker.

Confederate makes a very good point... While I have always been doe-eyed about the accuracy and fun factor of shooting any gun in the MARK Line, the Single Six can shoot .22lr and .22mag... Which clearly gives it the best ultility of the 2!

If it weren't for the loaded chamber indicator this would be a keeper. As it is, if a used Mark II presented itself, I think I'd make a trade. It's not that I have a problem with the function of the LCI on a range gun, I just don't like that Ruger cut a long hole in the receiver to place a tab of metal. Defaced the gun IMO. On a better note, the "billboard" warning that Ruger has become famous for, is on the underside of the barrel on this model, making it much less noticable.

I took it a part and cleaned it as per the manual, and it wasn't nearly as hard as I've read. It came apart easily, and as long as I followed the steps in the manual, it went back together easily also. I can see how someone might have problems if they didn't pay attention to the proper steps, especially upon reassembly, but otherwise I think it not bad at all.
