First Long-gun?

OK, as some have said, your first long gun should be a .22lr, say a Marlin model 980/981/925 turnbolt, or model 60 or 7000/795 semi-auto, as some examples of good, inexpensive, all-purpose .22s.

Then I think you should quickly buy your second longgun, a 12 ga or 20 ga pump shotgun.

Then I think you should quickly buy your 3rd longgun, a Lee Enfield in .303 Brit, either un-molested or "sporterized". Cheap, fast, reliable, great on game, detachable mags, cheap ammo, easily reloadable, etc. Or a similar milsurp. Hunter and all-purpose.

Then I think you should quickly buy your 4th long-gun, a gun in an "intermediate" chambering, like 7.62x39, 5.45x39, or 5.56x45, preferably semi-auto; something like a Kalishnakov of some flavor. Self-defense rifle. Or maybe even a levergun or pump gun in .30-30, .44 mag, or one of the above calibers, etc., if you want a "politically-correct-looking" self-defense rifle.

Ideally, you'd get all 4 of these on the same day, to jump start your collection. If you can't, the order has some logic to it, as pretty good natural progression anyhow. The first 1 (.22) is for game animals of the rodentia variety, as well as pest control, and just plain fun. The 2nd one (12 or 20 ga) is for game animals of the flying variety, as well as defense needs, and as you noted, with the slug barrel, for large game in states that don't allow rifles for deer, or in those that do, but also have a special shotgun season. The 3rd one (full power turnbolt) is for more serious defense work, large game, etc. And the 4th one is for fun, gun games, and very serious CQB defense, should that need ever arise (not likely but possible).

Yeah, take a look at the CMP site. There will probably have to be something special you have to do anyways, as your parents will have to do the paperwork, or at least sign it.

Requirements: http://www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/eligibility_requirements.htm

Oredr Form: http://www.odcmp.com/Forms/1orderform.pdf

It does look like they will have to do the paperwork, but I think it can be ordered with your requirements and marksmanshipi proof, from this paragraph here on the 2nd page:
I further certify that I am a current member of a gun club or state association presently affiliated with the CMP (or that I am a
parent or guardian of a junior shooter under the age of 18 who is a member), and that I am purchasing this rifle for my (or my
junior shooter’s) personal use and not for resale or commercial disposition.

30cal:i thought "prone" position was standing?
and, just for fun-gun shooting, would the sling be feasible to use standing?

gungoboom: i like your idea of "then quickly buy..." =) unfortunately, the purchases might be a few months apart. you know, money and all. i like your ideas for gun #2, 3 and 4. #1, well, i already have a .22lr that is prefect for all the things you mentioned. so the M1 will replace it. =)
i also like the idea of a heavy-ish caliber boltie for hunting. overlooked that in my list.

well, it seems like getting a Garand before i'm 18 might be a bit tough, and i'm considering waiting until 18 to do it all myself. someone mentioned earlier to get a CMP because it seemed like they were "running out". does anyone think that they'll run out of stock and not be able to replenish it in 3 years?

if that can be put off, i'll probably go with an SKS first, or perhaps a Mini 14. both cheap, and cheap ammo too. so here's my new plan:
SKS/mini 14
shotgun (12, 16, or 20g. pump, rifled and smoothbore)
Heavy caliber Boltie
self defence rifle or SKS/mini 14.[depending on if i get an SKS or mini-14 first]

then whenever i'm 18, be it before i get my first gun, or after i get a SD rifle, i'd drop everything and get a Garand.
