This is my first center-fire rifle and my first timed-rifle-competition.
Shot 60 rounds at 7, 25, and 50 yards; prone, standing, sitting and kneeling. Ammo is 55 grn American Eagle HP. The little carbine (no modification) felt very handy and is 100% reliable. During the first string, I didn't have time to finish both mags. Since the mags don't drop free, it took some fumbling to complete my first speed-load  After that, it was a breeze, I noticed I can actually change my mags quicker than the other shooters since all I had to do was strip the empty mag, drop it, reach under the butt stock (wherea others have to reach to their belts).
Most shots were a bit low on the Silhouette target, oops, I forgot I zeroed the rifle at 100 yards on Friday. :p
Final score is 547 out of 600. Hopefully I can refine my trigger pull by the next match. :(
Overall, it was a blast. I can't wait for the next match. Then I can move onto 3-gun matches. :)

I think I need to get some reliable metal 10-round mags (since I'm in CA) that will drop free. Any suggestions?

No. It takes some dextrous fingers to open the bipod, not something to attempt under stress. Besides I figured I may accidentally burn my fingers if I forgot to snap it shut after all that rapid-firing. :fire:

Years ago I shot PPC both for qualification and competition. It was the most accepted format in Police training when I started in 1975. I like the idea of the same format for a rifle. Sounds like a good essentials exercise to get back to the basics prior to the "Run and Gun" stuff of a 3 gun match.

I used to shoot often at weekly USPSA club matches in NC. We would pay to shoot one stage of about 40 to 50 rounds and then shoot as many guns as we were willing to pay for. I and several others would shoot carbines and .22s as well as other esoteric weapons during the matches on occasion. We simply followed the rules of the stage while shooting the longarm. I imagine that the standard PPC course of fire could be as easily adapted to carbine use and a fun way to burn powder with out all the running and such.

I need to look for something similar here or see if any local PPC shooters still exist in my neck of the woods. If I find them I might just bring the Colt LE Carbine as well! :)

Caseless...I would suggest you contact Bushmaster Firearms in Maine for a supply of 10 round magazines. The ones they sold during the Ban were top notch for the AR platform. Your SU16 should love'em as well. :)

Caseless,

Dont know whether you're northern or southern but NCPS, who shoots out of the Folsom Shooting Club, is planning a Rifle only match (basically 3-gun with only the rifle), for early september. Its not on the calandar yet but should be soon available at http://www.actionpistol.org/ .
