Hey all,

I caught gun fever over the past few weeks and read every good gun book I could get my hands on. To make a long story short, I decided to buy my first rifle, a solid bolt action 22, so I can practic with it till I can afford a nice bolt action dear rifle. Any way, I got to thinking and why not buy a cheap Revolver to do the same thing! To my dismay, all the post and internet reviews I was reading are from a few years ago when apparently, GUN PRICES WERE LOWER. :banghead:
Sorry, had to get that off my chest.

But recently, I found this
http://www.gunsamerica.com/94248147...ch_1994_Ohio_Dept_of_Corrections_Smith_W.htm#
Would you guys recoment this for a good starting revolver? I'd be using it for practicing so I know how to shoot handguns in the future, so target shooting, plinking, and home defence(Not that I need a home defence gun where I live)
If no, any others come to mind?

Any input would be great! Thanks guys!

Just wanted to chime in here - you could do worse than the S&W Model 10 police trade-ins that Bud's is selling for $269. These have the heavy barrel, and you can choose between square or round butt frames.

This is what I was going to chime in with. Here's the link:

Also check out the used revos at J&G. For a bit more money, you can get a used model 66 - stainless, adjustable sights, and chambered in .357mag, so you can shoot .357mags and .38spls. A 4" S&W M66 is an outstanding revolver.

Both Bud's & J&G are very reputable. Call CDNN, too. Also very reputable, they often have used revolvers in stock.

D-rock-
Those used K-frames are a great way to get yourself an accurate, durable, reliable wheelgun that will last for decades and not break the bank.
You're definitely on the right track here. The other thing I might suggest is to keep your eyes open in local shops for used Ruger Security Six, Service Six, or Speed Six.
Same size frames as the K frame guns, and more "heavy-duty" oriented frames. Triggers will be good, but likely not as good as the S&W revolvers.

I have a S&W 19-3, and a Ruger Security Six. The S&W has better fit/finish and trigger, the Ruger is the one I can take on a camping trip without caring about subjecting the gun to abuse.

Either way, you won't go wrong.

So was everything else.

It's called Inflation.
It takes $1.62 today to buy what $1.00 would buy 10 years ago.
It takes $5.42 today to buy what $1.00 would buy 30 years ago.

19-3Ben- I first read about everyone finding those, I haven't seen one come buy but I have been keeping my eyes open for one.

rcmodel- I know its crazy, the only gun books I had were from 2004 and 2005. When I finally decided to do some internet shopping my jaw hit the floor, especially the price of reloading, which I also plan on doing with this gun.

Thanks for your input!

Dan Wessons are very solid and can be found in your price range - the best value in revolvers.

I like the S&W Model 64 guns VERY much.

I have a M64 (no dash) with 4"brl , bobbed hammer , DAO , round butt paid $300

I also have a M64-3 with 4"brl , square butt.

You will have fun shooting this gun!

From reading around this forum for the past while you really should jump on one of the Bud's police turn in 10's. They are a SCREAMING good deal. Frankly unless they've got a boat load of them I'm a little surprised that they are still up for sale.

If you tend towards a medium to large glove size then get a round butt model. If you take large to Xlarge gloves then go for the square. Then with either option you can shop for grips to really suit you well since the Magna grips that these come with don't really fit a lot of folks all that well. Or find a Tyler grip filler.

+1 on the Bud's deal. The only reason I wouldn't jump on that (if I were you) is if you could get the same deal on a gun at a gunshow. The local shows here often have trade-in Model 64s for comparable prices. At a show you can inspect it first. There is a sticky in this forum about how to inspect a revolver.

My ex-gf bought one of those 64s at a show and it is a *fantastic* shooter.

I agree with finding a good police trade in at some of the places mentioned. They have usually been carried a lot and shot a little and cared for by a professional armor.

I continue to be surprised at how many good/decent deals there really are to be had on those S&W model 10/64/65 flavors, even in the scarce LGS places around here
(must be the fault of the tactical crowd, heckifiknow)

Have faith D-rock, and keep your eyes peeled, now that you have a better feel for what can still be had
(got mine for me, but if had excess cash, I would buy up five or six for gift giving to family, proper legal transfers done with gift)

I just picked up a near pristine S&W 36 (no dash) in a local pawn shop for under $300. I'm very happy with it so far. Excellent carry piece.

I love my Heritage 6.5" .22LR/.22Mag. It shoots really accurate. The only downfall is it is a six shooter. It would be nice if it was a nine or twelve shot.
But I can recommend it as a good single action revolver for under $180.00. I have shot small saplings down at 15 yards with it, and I use it with super colibri rounds for rat/poisonous snake eradication. It will shoot shorts, long rifle, colibri, super colibri, rat shot, and magnums. A very versatile single action .22.

I don't know if you're looking for a .38/.357 in particular, but I thought I'd throw this in the mix.

I know I will get the famous horse laugh, but there are some police trade-in Taurus revolvers in .38 Special on the market for around $150. Sure, I would prefer S&W, and .357 Magnum, but if cost were the primary consideration, I would certainly consider those guns.

Jim

I could be perfectly happy with a good trade-in K frame Smith or Taurus .38.

no horselaugh from me here
Taurus used to turn out a lot of decent 38s, model 82s were real popular way down south there, look mighty like a heavy barrel model 10
worth a gamble if just starting out with limited $$$ resource

D Rock,
You are on the right path. Lots of good advice on this thread. I own S&W revolvers and a Taurus. They are solid and shoot great.
Colt Trooper Mark III is a great revolver. Probably can't find one in your price range but you never know. Keep your eye out for one just in case you get lucky...

Not from me you won't. I had one of those old Taurus 80-somethings, back in the day and it was a first rate revolver. The finish and grips weren't as nice as a Smith & Wesson but they shot just as well. I sort of wish I had held onto that gun. The only reason I haven't bought another one to replace it is I have a dozen or so Smith & Wesson 38/357's.

It's hard to beat a medium frame 38, no matter who made it.

I was just at the Northwest Pony Express in Hayden, Idaho a week or two back and they had a bunch of Model 10 trade-ins for $219ea or $199 ea if you bought two. They had a few different barrel configurations also.

It's probably good you didn't go for the gun in the link in your original post. The seller says it's a four inch, that the picture is of the exact gun, but the pic is of a six inch. Something not right there.
