The last time I shot a rifle for fun was 42 years ago. Methinks it is time to start again. Here is my criteria:

1. no semi-automatics; I prefer the fun of a pump action, lever or bolt.

2. accuracy not a big issue as I assume most current production models are reasonably accurate

3. plinking only; most likely a .22lr

4. good looking wood stock

5. capable of being left to grandchildren

In this set of requirments I have considered the Rremington 504 (bolt), the Marlin 39A (lever) and Taurus 62 (pump).

Any thoughts on those or other suggestions?

i really like the remington version you looked at. very nice looking rifle.

i suggest you also check out kimber before you make a final decision. the remington will probably win out, but it wouldn't hurt for you to see others. i say the remington will probably win out because it is still 'heirloom quality', but maintains some semblence of affordability...

I have a Taurus 62 pump. Fun, but mine's the short barrel, get the longer one for accuracy, and maybe the tang sight.

Marlin makes some good bolt guns, I had a synthetic stocked 25N (now the 925) and it could hit accurately at 100 yards (keeping it on a silhouette) with irons.

CZ makes some very nice wood stocked .22 hunting rifles for varmints too.

Get the plainest version of the CZ 452, not much over $200. Blue steel and European hardwood if not walnut, accuracy very good to phenomenal.

Get out of AARP. They have an organizational anti-gun policy.

Based solely from handling 'em in a gunstore, I think that the Savage rimfire bolties are much nicer in quality than the Marlin's.... Dunno which one will shoot better, tho.

Next suggestion would be to check out AARP's stance on guns. If I remember they are very anti gun. Write them a letter and protest their policy. :)

Another recommendation for the CZ 452. IMHO, it's the best value for money, and close to the top quality, available in .22LR. The only rifles I would call "better" are Kimbers, Anschutz's, etc., and they're going to cost 3 - 4 times as much.

Nobody even mentioned the EAA Biathalon basic. Very well put togather, very accurate, very unique.

The savage my friend has is about minute of soda can at 75 yards so. The little MK IIs are pretty good guns.

Sounds like you already know how to shoot a rifle. If so, I think you'd have to go a long way to beat the fun of a lever action. Life is too short to waste it not having fun.

Second the recommendation to dump AARP. Henious anti-gunners.

I would look at the Anschutz rifles (model 1416D is their .22 'sporting rifle'). They are nice to shoot, bolt action, good triggers, nice wood. Price is probably in the ~$500 range as a result of the soft dollar.

For sheer plinking pleasure, get a Marlin 39A. Still made of real walnut and forged steel. More fun than should be allowed at my age. (I rival dirt for longevity!)

Many good suggestions, but a nice CZ 452 is tough to beat for the price. Very accurate for the $$.

Call http://www.whittakerguns.com/ and ask for their best price on the model you choose. Very good prices and cheap shipping. You just need to find a low priced FFL for the transfer fee. They'll talk you through the simple process, if you are not familiar with buying from out of state.

I have the American and love it. Of course, it comes w/o iron sights and needs a scope. The Basic, Lux & Trainer are highly touted iron sighted rifles.

You can hit the CZ forum at www.rimfirecentral.com for info on the various models. Of course, there is also http://www.cz-usa.com/

Whatever brand or model you choose, have fun!
