Hey Folks, I was at the range today and put a couple hundred rounds through my 45acp. As I was policing up my brass, a guy showed up in the next lane with a little Russian midsize .380 . As I was packing up to leave, he pulls out his P3AT. Well naturally, that gets us to gabbing, and after a couple mags, he offers to let me shoot his last 3 rounds. Well heck yeah!
Now this is the first one of these little guns that I've ever seen, and I might add that I've never held or even imagined holding a 6 or 7 ounce pistol. I've read a lot about them and the LCP, almost entirely on this site; and was expecting it to spank my hand soundly. This thing is a pussycat. A really really tiny pussycat! There is no hold-open after the last round, but the mag does drop free when I hit the release button. I like that. It had a looong trigger pull (hey, I'm a 1911 guy) but it was smooth, and stageable.
I didn't note the grain bullet or the brand, but it was rn fmj. My 3 shots were at 15 yards and were covered by the palm of my hand... within 4 inches; this with a gun I've never before held, sights painted white and bar-dot (?), and no experience dry firing. (I'm used to black sights). With his permission and his pocket holster, I stuck it in my left front pocket, where it completely disappeared. No "printing", no pocket sag, no nothing, no foolin'. I can't wait to try out an LCP (I think that they have a last-round-hold-open.)

My only other mini-gun experience is several years shooting and carrying an AMT Backup 45, which does spank, and weighs something like 25 ounces loaded.

I'm almost ashamed to admit just how much I enjoyed my extremely limited time with this little gun, and how much I'd have enjoyed spending considerably more time and ammo with it.

bear in mind, the P3AT is really only meant for point shooting at close range, such as would most likely be the case in a self-defense situation.

It's a neat little gun. I'm surprised that you didn't have it stovepipe from limpwristing on your first time. It took me a mag or 2 before I got the hang of it.

they arent a Seecamp, but they will do for those on a budget.

I bought one this last winter as a briefcase/carry gun. What a neat little weapon. Cheap enough so I don't feel bad about leaving it in the car overnight in the winter then bringing it in the office where it's warm. (I just oil it regularly), but dependable (so far) with no reliability problems, and pretty darn accurate. All in all a good value in my humble opinion.

Cheese, (you really should be a fellow Wisconsinite), why would you think I'd be a limp-wrister? I'd just gotten done with ~200 230gr fmj .45's?

That's right, the P3AT is lighter, and (IIRC) flatter too! :D
No doubt :)

I have three Kel Tec's and I'm not uncomfortable carrying any of them for defense. I consider my P11 a bit large for a pocket, but the P3AT is perfect in that role. None of them are precision, match weapons, but for 10-20 ft they are plenty capable.

my grand kids might remember what was said about the kel-tecs as they shoot thier Seecamp that they inherited from me...

like i said, they are good for those on a budget....

A WHOLE bunch lighter and a lot thinner, not to mention working more reliably than POS Seecamps.

I once thought a Seecamp would be just the ticket so I bought one. Two of those stupid springs, many FTF using the SPECIFIED WW Silvertips and I'd had enough of that chunky little piece of overrated junk. Took it down and traded it away for a 3PaT for me and a P32 for my wife.

Now we carry Keltecs as bugs to my Colt CCO and her CZ83 because even already carrying fairsize hardware we can slip the Keltecs in pockets and forget their there. ^ oz (!) for hers, a little more for mine + 2 to 3 more OUNCES for full magazines.

Having the Keltecs has nothing to do with what we can afford. We can buy any guns we want and do, or could go and buy 100 each if we wanted.

"They aren't a Seecamp, but they will do for those on a budget" .....PACK SAND, jerree!

(need I say that I can't stand people who would say such jerkoff things as that?)

krs, are you off your meds again?

we were talking about inanimate objects, tools to most of us....like Snap-on vs. Craftsman.....

no one has slapped your mother.

Yeah, KT P3ATs are neat little guns.

They aren't the best put together in the world, but mine's gone "bang" everytime I take it to the range. Since it's my daily BUG, that's a good thing. One thing you have to watch for on these buggers is the way they collect lint. I take mine down at least once every 2 weeks (if I haven't shot it) to blow the pocket lint out of the crevices. It works pretty well.

It's a snappy pistol to fire, but if you can put a pie-plate sized group together at 7 yards, you are doing just fine with this.

good point! many folks forget that even if you dont shoot it, a pocket gun of any make needs to be cleaned every week or so...

Just because it's different shooting a tiny gun like the P3AT. If your hands are large enough, you can't get a proper grip on it and instead end up clamping it between your thumb and forefinger.

Tiny gun + difficulty in getting proper grip + not hard, but snappy recoil = easy to limpwrist your first time.

It wasn't a personal thing or anything. I think a lot of people on there first few shots with a tiny gun limpwrist.

Not only:

That's right, the P3AT is lighter, and (IIRC) flatter too!

The P3 is also more pleasant to fire. The Seecamp has about a 1.6 finger grip and the slide requires 3 times the effort of a P3AT.

My P3 lives in the same safe as multiple 4-figure handguns and rifles; Budget has nothing to do with it.

Kt is always in pocket no matter whats on hip. Wife carries one to.
LCP does not lock back on last round when fireing Can be locked back by hand . Least that what Ive read.

32winspl,

Just one thing for your information...

The LCP has a slide lock, but it is manual only, it does not automatically hold the slide open after the last round.
