First time pistol Purchase

Rem, love the sig... Boondock saints....amazing movie

I will have to go shoot the MP and the G19 to figure out what i want most. I really like the feel of the MP though, and so did the GF. For a carry weapon that will probably be in a back holster, i think it makes more sense to have a lighter gun. That is just my thinking though as i have NO experience. The guy I am going to buy from is wanting $375 for Glock or MP, so either way.....in my ~$700 budget, I may have to spring for them both for a little extra cash ;):D

Wow, let me know which one you get, so I can jump on the other one! At that price, you cannot go wrong. By the way, what's his phone number?

I think part of your problem is that your attempting to buy ONE gun for TWO people and for different reasons.

If you could really afford it, get one for you or her, use it until you can get a specific one for the other.

Don't you like the Springfield XD?

If it were me and knowing what I know now as an owner of the full-size MP9, I would have bought the MP9c or the XD9c instead of the full-size. The MP has the changeable backstraps - nice, if your GF has small hands and you have larger hands - as one gun can fit you both equally well. The XD9c has either a short mag for concealed carry or a longer mag if you want a more hand-filling grip. To me, the grip feel and angle of the Glock are wrong. But, if you shot it and liked it, that answers my critique. A 1911, a classic (which I also have), is surprisingly concealable thanks to its relatively slim design. Heavier than the polymer guns, it also lends more mass to fight against recoil. You might consider a commander or officer size 1911, although you generally pay more for less (size). Rock Island - mentioned before - makes a Commander for about the same price as their Tactical, and if you watch, you can sometimes find them with an ambi thumb safety - a big + if you're a southpaw.

IMHO, the MP9 with its variable backstraps is your ticket. WHile your GF might like the 1911's big boom & pushy recoil, she knows she likes the 9. Stick with what she knows & likes.

And hang on to that gal!!!

Second, is a Taurus
At the least, they used to have problems, and probably still have them.

Since I think the other 2 have been ruled out (at least for me) I'd get the g19. I've shot a subcompact polymer 9mm before, it had some recoil, but more than that it had a lot of rise. The g19 probably won't be as bad, though if you're going to be shooting a lot, you might want a .22 kit for it, or a heavier gun.

Since nobody has mentioned it, I shall. Learning to shoot with a 22 rimfire handgun is much more pleasureable than a larger caliber. They help you avoid some of the bad habits that recoil cause. The things you learn with the 22 will serve well when shooting the larger caliber. In a pinch, they can serve as a self defense firearm and then you have two guns to take to the range and shoot together. I'm thinking more of a house/range/plinking gun for the 22, not something you carry (but some do, for example the Smith 317). If you consider a 22 pistol, look at the Ruger Mark III (heavy barrel) or Browning Buckmark. They are both nice trail guns as long as you aren't doing the AT.

My father has a Ruger .22, and I really enjoyed firing it. The GF has never used any firearm before she shot the 9mm, (was funny, and cruel of me to watch her almost fall on her butt:):) ) I never thought of getting one for myself. I will have to look into that. Thanks

Andrew - in the end you can't go wrong with either - My wife has a Glock 19 and a 26 - both are great - she just really likes the feel of the Glock better. The 19 is a great size pistol, right in the middle of a full size and a sub compact.

I carry a M&P 9c with me everyday - never had a single issue with this pistol - very accurate, and fun to shoot. My wife likes the M&P as well, but prefers her Glocks, so if that's a possible issue then you might want to have her shoot the M&P too if you can, to see which she prefers.

And don't apologize about the Taurus - Taurus makes some fine handguns but they can be hit and miss IMO - I haven't had good luck with them personally but many have - but I would get the Glock or the M&P before the Taurus, especially at those prices you were quoted - good luck!

I know it's not on your list, but you might consider one of the polymer Sigs.

My wife hated automatics until she fired my 9mm SP2009. Now I have to fight her for it at the range.

I have never seen the springfield XD, so I have no opinion on it.

You should really look at a Springfield XD. They are great guns at a great price.

The problem with Glocks is their grip has an extreme angle, and that makes it a love-it/hate-it style grip.

You may love the Glock grip angle, but she may hate it.

So I'd go to the range, try a few out and see what you both like.

Sometimes one gun can't make two people happy.

You may have to buy 2 guns, and that makes everyone happy. :)
