What is the best method for fixing a firing pin hole (breech face) that is .170 on old double? I know the max diameter on the firing pin tip is .080. Could a new pin be made to fit the hole and then just put the smaller size tip on the end of the new firing pin? Should I bush the oversize hole and match it up to the .079 of the other pin in the gun? Thanks for your thoughts

Holey Firing Pin!

Howdy jeff, and welcome aboard.

The best way to fix it is to open up the hole to a substantially larger diameter and heat-shrink a hardened steel insert with the correct diameter hole, with a dab of LocTite Stud and Bearing Mount to cinch it. A fairly expensive method, due to the required precision involved, and the decision as to whether the gun is worth the cost is a personal one.

The problem with making an oversized pin is that, worn holes generally don't wear evenly, and wind up being egg-shaped...or worse...which necessitates opening the hole up a little more to make it round/concentric...and making a firing pin that's possibly as much as a 32nd inch oversized. If the hole isn't too badly wallowed out, the oversized pin route might be feasible. Pick a smith for the work...carefully...not all smiths are created equal...and let him(or her) make a suggestion.

Luck!
