As a brief preface:
I am one of those accursed souls fighting a long and tedious battle with wrong-handedness. At the moment, I use the Glock platform and some unorthodox techniques to make the weapon function for me, to the best degree I can. It is serviceable, and I love the Glock itself, but the whole no-ambidextrous-controls-because-you-have-screwed-up-eyes thing is getting old, especially shooting with those of you with correctly made hands and eyes (for those of you just joining us or skimming up to this point, I'm a lefty. Life sucks).
In my search for a functional handgun for a southpaw, I stumbled upon the Fabrique Nationale Herestal USA (talk about a mouthful) FNX-9. It features complete ambidextrous functionality, is a DA/SA design, has both a safety and a decocker, hammer-forged barrel, good sights, and comes with three 17 round magazines. Retails for $550 plus shipping and transfer fee to your FFL of choice. I really want it (as in, the $550 is all set aside and I'm itching to post the Gen III Glock 19 F/S, want it), but if there are any glaring issues, I'd love for you all to fill me in on them. I see nothing that worries me as of yet, but I'm no handgun expert, I haven't even touched 1000 rounds with the Glock. I don't yet have too much invested in the Glock platform, just a cheapo leather holster and a SERPA right now, as well as the two mags it came with and one extra I bought.
Advice? Opinions on the FNX? Shooting reports and reviews, especially those from you southpaws?

Thanks for completing the descent of that text wall.

The FNX-9 simply kicks butt :)
I have to give you credit for finding it, most people skip right over these...
The FNX is a highly underrated pistol, especially in their price range. The FNX does everything well. So, go shoot one and stop looking at pics ;)

A Glock is the perfect gun for a lefty. Just get a gen 4 and swap the mag release.

Sometimes I wish the slide release were on the wrong side. That way I'd never hit it by accident.

The FNX is great. Easy to shoot well. Low recoil. But the decocker/safety lever is in a bad spot if you like a high thumb grip. Oh, and the ambi mag release is a bit too big and sensitive for a serious firearm, IMO.

If you get one, do yourself a favor and swap the release lever. By default, the lefty lever isn't hanging on there as secure as the righty lever, but it can be reversed.

I have an FNP-40. Really like it. The only issue I have head of with the FNX or FNP is that sometimes when certain examples get very hot, they will not fire in double action. I have not experienced this myself, as I mostly shoot single action. People have said that FNH has fixed this for them though.

I'd really like to know what a makes a "serious" firearm?

My wife shoots an FNX-9 in action pistol and has no problems with the "decocker/safety lever in a bad spot," or the ambidextrous magazine release.

Her last scores with the FNX were: Stage 1: 17 (A) 1(C); Stage 2: 10 (A) 4 (C); Stage 3: 11 (A) 3 (C); and Stage 4: 11 (A) 1 (B) 6 (C).

I guess in the right hands it's fairly serious?

I love my FNX 40. It is one of the most accurate pistols I have ever shot. Zero issues with mag release, decocker/safety or it getting hot and not functioning. I have even noticed it does'nt get as hot as other pistols I have after same number of rounds fired as fast as possible (with the SA trigger that's pretty darn fast). I do wish the decocker/safety lever was steel though, my only complaint! I'm not a southpaw, sorry about your luck but I think the FNX would be a great addition for any shooter.

I'm a lefty, my wife is a righty. Recently we went seeking a semi as our first pistol. We came home with a FNX-40. We haven't looked back. Wonderful gun. Lightyears ahead of the 1911 .45 I had 30 years ago. You should be very happy with the FNX9/40.

...BTW she shoots it better than me. 3" groupings at 15yrds.

Not sure if the FNX 9mm suffers from the same mag problem as the FNP 45, but you may have FTF issues with Winchester White Box ammo. Other than this issue, my FN has been flawless!

is there any downside to the slightly older FNP version? been seeing some pretty good prices lately on those and I actually like the smaller all metal decocker-safety over that big plastic lever on the FNX. the couple I've handled had excellent SA triggers.

The only real downside to the FNP vs. the FNX is the reversible rather than fully ambi mag release and one less round capacity in the 9mm. The FNX also has a much more aggressive texture on the grips than the FNP, some like it and some prefer the old FNP grip.

Some FNPs do not have a safety, only a decocker. If you get the USG version, it comes with a safety/decoker. The FNP also does not have ambidextrous mag release (I believe it can be reversed though) or slide stop, the FNP only has a single locking slot on the accessory rail. The FNX has the pyramid type grip texturing, like the Glock Gen 4.

I liked the FNP better, so I bought it...may get and FNX-9 in the future

I'm not a die hard Glock fan, but they have worked as well as anything I've tried. But I recently have tried the FNX-9mm. It has taken a while to get used to the sights and trigger. The POI is right behind the white dot of the front sight instead of on top of it as on most guns. At least with my gun. I was hitting several inches low consistently before I figured this out.

I think this gun has a LOT of potential. For now I still have more trust in the Glock, but as I shoot it more I'm gaining confidence in it.

I like this gun because of the safety that works like a 1911. I like Glocks well enough, but wouldn't have one with a chambered round out of a holster. The FN makes a better nightstand or glovebox gun since it can be left chambered and on safe. With a Glock in this role I either need to leave it unchambered, or in a holster. If the holster is on my side, no problem, but from a nightstand or glovebox, it is just as fast to not have a chambered round.

I really want to try the FNX. It feels real good in my hands. But, the M&P that I own feels real nice too so the FNX is on the wish list.

Here’s a photo of the Browning Pro-9, which was the civilian version of the earlier FNP-9 manufactured by FNH for Browning. Notice the less aggressive stippling on the grip.

I'm a lefty too and rather than suffer with the fact that guns are designed for righties, I just learned to shoot righty when I started learning to shoot. At this point, shooting righty is what feels normal and natural to me, and shooting lefty feels weird.

Have you looked at the CZ-75

Yeah, and I just can't get into it. Good solid handgun, but heavy. I'm highly weight-conscious, my work requires me carry enough stuff as it is.

My FNP 40 was one of the ones that would not fire in DA in hot weather. There were a couple more isolated cases similar to mine out there. FNH took mine in, and after about three months of extended research and testing, they swapped out the whole trigger assembly. Their rep told me that they knew about the issue, and were taking steps to fix it in future batches... So I wouldn't worry too much about it.
