When I was reading before that FN switched from a forged frame to a cast frame, it was because the 9mm and the 40 caliber use the same frame. Just different slides and barrels.
Yes the frames will interchange; but No because the ejector prevents (just) swapping slides. I have a couple of both, been there, tried that; no go without changing parts.
How difficult would it be to change the ejector? I have a .40 Hi-Power and I am thinking about getting a 9mm barrel and slide. Assuming I also buy a 9mm ejector, is that something I could do myself or should I have a gunsmith do it?
Changing parts is not overly difficult as detail striping the HP is just a little more trouble than a 1911. However, I would not want to do it on a regular basis as in changing back and forth between calibers. Also have you priced a 9MM slide? The last time I checked they were well over $700 so unless you have a source for a cheap used one or are planning some FM or FEG parts hybrid I don't see the advantage.
Why not get a conversion bbl? 9mm bbl made to operate in the 40SW slide. Supposodly makes the Hi Power into a very tough 9mm able to handle almost any +P or +P+ ammo. I believe this is due to the 40 having three locking lugs while the 9 has only two. Anyhoo, the conversion has been written up numerous times. Try searching it.
... but if your objective is to shoot 9mm from your .40 platform then I'm not sure why that would be a bad thing......
personally, with prices ~$400 I would just pick up another FN in 9 and save yourself the hassle of switching parts back and forth
