FN49 vs.CZ75 vs. Steyr m9

I have the Steyr in .40 and the CZ in 9mm and .40. Depending on what you want it for should determine your selection. For a range gun and accuracy the CZ would be hard to beat. I also have had mine converted to SAO so I get a sweet trigger pull. With the CZ you can also get relatively reasonably priced full capacity magazines since the gun has been around for 25+ years and plentiful in the U.S. since 1990. The Steyr was not made until after 1994 so no full caps are available. The only downside to the CZ is the size when compared to the Steyr. The Steyr is a bit smaller and easier to conceal, but you do get the consistent trigger pull. The Steyr trigger can be improved (smoother and lighter) by a trained gunsmith.

Sure SHot formerly known as Cook's Sure SHot? Is your son named Jeff? If so, I know him. Cook's use to have pinshoots and during a rimfire rifle side match, I went up against his daughter. She beat me. I was using his mossberg cmp 22 and she had some sort of 22 semi. I didn't have a chance, but it was nice to see the kid light up when she won. Good meeting you.

I have actually met you at Austin Skeet and Rifle range about 3 years ago. You had a Garand or two and Jeff was with you. We all stood and talked with George Tatom.

Well, I don't think it was me. First off, I have never been to the Austin Skeet and Rifle range, let alone with my son, and I don't have any Garands. George's name looks familiar. I might have met you in late 1999 at a meeting of the Austin Rifle Club when I was garnering support for a run at the 10th District seat in the U.S. House of Reps. held by anti-gunner Lloyd Doggett.

Questions ....what is the main purpose of the gun? Defense, CCW, range, general all around gun? It would dictate which I'd recommend. All are not "well known" guns, with the CZ getting better currently, and are great quality handguns.
Shoot well

Interesting choices: A DAO, a DA/SA and a neither.

The CZ is probably the best gun, but the heaviest. Too heavy to carry? Up to you. Consider the decocker model or the compact/alloy frame/decocker version. Hi cap mags are cheap!

FN49? Kind of neat, not small, heavy trigger. This is going to be the most difficult to shoot well, due to the trigger. But the trigger isn't bad for a DAO. They aren't popular, shop for price. 10 round only.

M9. I have an issue with this weapon. It is very well designed, with the exception of the striker system. While these parts are very strongly built, there is none of the normal redundancy found in all other combat pistols. In the unlikely event that one of the striker or sear parts should fail, the gun will fire (including in your holster or nightstand). Yikes.

There was much debate on the M pistol at TFL. The above is just a summary. If you want more details, look for those old threads or email me. I'm not a Steyr owner, I just thought it was astounding that they built a gun that way.

You could also consider a Ruger. Cheap and tough, like these others. Sig Pros are also to be found for under $400. Good luck.
