I was thinking of getting a folding stock for my Norinco
MAK-90 (purely for "tacticool" reasons) but was unsure
if it would be legal to do so under Michigan law;

"3. Do rifles or shotguns with collapsible/folding stocks
have to be registered in Michigan?

MCL 750.222 Yes, provided the rifle or shotgun is 30
inches or less in overall length with the stock collapsed/
folded but at least 26 inches and the barrel length is at
least 16 inches and 18 inches respectively."

THE MICHIGAN PENAL CODE (EXCERPT)
Act 328 of 1931 - 750.222 Definitions.

"(k) “Short-barreled rifle” means a rifle having 1 or more
barrels less than 16 inches in length or a weapon made
from a rifle, whether by alteration, modification, or other
wise, if the weapon as modified has an overall length
of less than 26 inches."

Measuring from the receiver tang (fixed buttstock removed)
to the end of the pinned-on muzzle break, I get 27.750"

But Michigan law doesn't count the muzzlebreak but that
only adds 1.150" to the overall length, thus giving me an
overall length (minus the muzzlebreak) from the barrel's
muzzle to the receiver tang of 16.600" which would be legal.

Add to this the length of the folding stock mechanism that
is securely bolted to the receiver (which I'd guess to be well
over 1.00"?) I ought to be OK as far as Michigan law, correct?

Assuming my AK would be legal, what folding stocks does
the board recommend?

I was looking at the "ACE" brand Delrin/aluminum "FAL style"
folding stock but I'd prefer one that was all metal, except all
the others I've seen have an ugly 2" drop to the stock.

I thought that the pinned-on muzzle brake would count since it's permanently attached. If this is true, you would still need to find a folding stock that adds 2.25" length when folded.

There was a bill passed by the House last year to change the length of a pistol to < 26" instead of < 30". I think it's still stuck in the Senate: http://www.legislature.mi.gov/(S(co...g.aspx?page=getObject&objectName=2009-HB-4501

Since this isn't law yet, you might need to go down to the cop shop and register it.

I think that the Mossberg 500 JIC model counts as a long-gun and personally I don't see that a PGO Shotgun is anything different than a Folding-Stock Rifle.

What I would do is measure the overall length of the firearm with the stock folded from the firearms rearmost point to the front-most point that counts on the barrel.

So that would be from the back to the front of the muzzle, or the muzzle brake or flash hider if it is considered to be part of the barrel.

IF and ONLY IF the overall length of the firearm still meets or exceeds the minimum overall length for a rifle then I would say it is fine as a rifle. If it does not meet or exceed the minimum length or it questionably exceeds the length, I would not trust that it is a long-gun and see if the local PD will register as a pistol.

Oops, that should read 26.600"
