Now this is by no means a 100% prefect list and I do not maintain that Ruger is the BEST firearms builder out there. Looks like Ruger frequents the list the most with 6 appearances followed by S&W with 5 appearances.

http://www.shootingindustry.com/si9202/hnd9202.html

2010 handgun of the year is the Ruger SR9c.

I maintain that Ruger builds a darn good pistol or rifle for a fair price.

They build OK firearms for sure, but this "award" is more of a gauge of which company spends the most advertising dollars with magazines, rather than a reflection on quality.

Have you ever read a write up in a gun rag that was negative? Me neither.

They also won the award in 2008 for the Ruger P-3AT.
How can these awards mean [much] when they give it to a company who rips off another company's design?

Worthless.

All gun makers copy off other gun makers. Look at the Walther PPS, if that is not a ripoff of a Glock 26 I don't know what is. The Beretta 92 is a re-worked Walther P38, the Springfield 1903 is a Mauser in 30-06, etc. Get my meaning?

There are "Ruger bashers"? I've seen Taurus and Rossi bashed. There's a whole gang that bash ILS S&Ws. But from what I can tell, if you want a pocket knife, a million people here will gush about how you must buy a Spyderco, and if you want a semi-auto, the same bunch will order you to buy a Glock, and if you want a revolver, that gang will demand that you get an SP101.

All I can say is that my GP-100 is a great gun. Don't know about their pistols, but I'd love to get a Redhawk too.

Of course the moaners and groaners will never mention the fact that Ruger has turned a profit every year since its inception. Or that despite an industry-wide decline in sales for the first half of 2010, they had an increase in sales and continue to operate on cash, completely debt-free. Or that Bill Ruger was not only the most prolific firearms designer of the 20th century but also an extremely successful businessman.

Yes, I am serious.

Hey, the list is handgun of the year, not best handgun of the year.

I spy a Sigma and a Sig 1911 on that list. And a bunch of too big hand cannons and too little peashooters. Interesting list to say the least. And not a Sig X-5 in sight either. Not enough mass appeal I suppose, considering the price tags on them.

Reminds me of the first new, modern Chevy Malibu winning a bunch of awards. My father bought one and it was okay. He traded it on a new Toyota Avalon when he came to his senses. :)

I started buying Rugers in '72 and stopped in '86. They're fine guns, but my interests have changed.

"HATE" threads and Love threads don't have a lot of survival potential around here.

Let's try to keep the discussion objective and not wander into "fanboy" and "hater" territory or the thread won't get very far.

Ruger has made some fine rifles, shotguns and pistols and they've made some very successful rifles, shotguns and pistols (not always the same thing). Like any company they've had miss-steps as well.

As pointed out "Pistol of the Year" is an iconic award and not a quality or innovation award.

I purchased 6 Rugers over the years, hoping that each sussessive one would shoot a little more accurately. Took six times to give up and they have all been sold to happy new Ruger owners.

What MGUNHNTR said! Ruger firearms are ok, kinda big, an clunky but dependable. They used to be priced right, but now cost as much as the high priced spread. Considering the level that Colt and Smith have fallen too, even Ruger can look down on them now. There 10/22 is a home run. The new 375 Ruger is an awesome round, the african rifle is decent, but it costs more than a Weatherby, and it's no where near their league. In my opinion the main thing wrong with a ruger today, is it's about 25% more money than its worth, which all things considered might not be that bad.

To JohnBT.

Comparing a Chevy Malibu and a Toyota Avalon is not comparing apples to apples. The Malibu's base price is $21K while the Avalon's base price is $32K. I would hope for $11K more you would get a nicer car.

The Malibu is a direct competitor to the Camry as they are roughly in the same price class.

Why don't we compare a Cadillac CTS-V to a Toyota Corolla? My how much nicer the Caddy is than the Toyota, never mind the price difference between the two.

I still maintain for the money spent, you will be hard pressed to find a better firearm than a Ruger.

Everyone wants to holler about how they copied the KT...They may have, but they're certainly not the first to do that, as others have just pointed out. However, in the case of the LCP...I wouldn't call it a copy...I'd say they "refined" it...In comparison, the Ruger LCP looks like something you would "want" to own...

To gunguy:

I can get an SR9 for about $400. Can you please name a better 9mm pistol for $400?

I can get a P95 for about $320. Can you name a better 9mm pistol for $320?

The Ruger 10/22 can be had for $200 with wood stock. Name me a better .22 rifle for $200.

Ok the designer who developed the Kel Tec .380 and the LCP is the same. Ruger paid him to develope a slightly better design because he held the pattented to the design. Kel Tec wouldnt pay him for his design so he left. This all came out before the recall and has been discussed here before adnausium.
As for a better shooting rifle straight from the box a Marlin model 60 will outshoot a new 10/22 anyday, stchman, or as many have said a Marlin 39A will to. Its the microgrooved barrel, sssshhhh ancient chinese secret.

The Sigma series pistols must be the scewed data point. I recently got rid of a Sigma SW9VE as I really did not like the thing at all. It functioned is all I can say.

To doc2rn:

I have owned both the Ruger 10/22 and the Marlin Model 60. I find the 10/22 to be a better shooter, but that is my opinion. I like the Model 60 as well so don't take that as I think the Model 60 sucks.

We are each entitled to our opinion.

Keep in mind that most of the "bashing" of Ruger in the gun forums is not because if the quality of their product, but because old man Ruger liked to push for gun control laws that impacted his competition harder than they would his company in order to gain market advantage.

But hell, Bill's dead and his thinking no longer in charge at Ruger so let it go (I have, and I was one of the biggest Ruger bashers back in the day).

I'll second the Marlin 60 and add the Remington 597, for semi autos. The Savage bolt guns are incredibly accurate for $200. Everyone likes the 10/22 because it can be customized. The problem is it has to be in order to shoot with other guns in it's class.

I have a few Ruger handguns, Super Blackhawk, Mark I, and an LCP. All are fine guns. I refuse to drink the 10/22 kool-aid.

Another vote for the Marlin 60 - I have owned both and prefer the 60 for it's accuracy, dependability and quality over the 10/22.

Their Security-six was decent, their MKII is also fairly decent. Their newer revolvers are awful clunky and heavy, probably due to their being cast metal
