I really like Ian's take on training scars. Training scars being the idea that you will do instinctually what you trained when the SHTF, and if you train wrong that will get you "killed on the streets."

My take, on Ian's take, is that its better to have a very broad spectrum of training/skills and trained sufficiently that you can do any of those actions easily (second nature) while leaving your higher brain function free to pick the actions that are appropriate to the situation. Training scars IMHO are when you train only a few specific "optimal skills" and not sufficient to make them second nature this leaves you with less free conscious brain power for strategic thinking and limited options since your training was too narrowly focused.

Train broadly but sufficiently so you can execute the tactics at the instinctual (second nature) level BUT only when you mind consciously initiates them at a deliberate strategic level. ie playing off Ian's final example letting the mag drop free is usually the fastest reload for a magazine fed firearm but a retained mag can be used later. Neither should be done out of habit it should always be a conscious decision and you should have enough training to be able to do either as a quick efficient second nature action.
