I recently was denied a transfer from outta-state (sigh; I live in Maura Healy land). So, because of course I wouldn’t think of having them refund my dough, I gave all the cases the once-over again… and wouldn’t you know, saw what for me qualifies as a unicorn: A Ruger Redhawk 8-shot .357 revo, in the 5.5” bbl. And so it came home with me. What a tank! Couldn’t wait to shoot the dang thing, so once I was done staring at it, gave it a good cleaning and Off to the Range for zeroing! And then… a little voice started reminding me about unicorns: They’re rare… for a reason.
After going thru most of a box of Federal 158gr, I noticed some grittiness building up in the double-action; and sometimes, the trigger would bind up after maybe the first third of the pull… it I let back off, I could then pull completely thru the travel. First I assumed it was just gettin a little gummed up by powder. But it seemed to get worse. So I finished off the box (some in SA) and packed up.
Once home, I first cleaned it the way I do ALL my DAs: With the cylinder open, in one piece. Still, after it was cleaned, it still had that gritty pull, and sometimes felt like it was binding up in the hammer/triggerpull. So, with YouBoob playin, I field-stripped it. (And wow; that trigger assembly pin felt like it was crush-fit in place by King Kong; took some oiling and rubber-mallet love just to shift slightly. After that, it was fine…!) I noticed that the transfer bar still had some rough casting to its edges. I used some 1000grit sandpaper, and smoothed it all out; then used a little machine oil on some contact areas (NOT near the sear!) before reassembly. And now, finally… it feels Unicorn-ey. Smoother pull throughout, and no grit or hesitation.
Time to PEW!
