Found my dad's CMP Garand paperwork - No Service or Rack grade wording.

This it appears:

CMP SPECIAL: (EXCELLENT)

CMP’s new grade of M1 Garand. This rifle consists of a new production stock and handguard set with CMP cartouche, a new production barrel and new web sling. Receiver and most other parts are refinished USGI, but some parts may be new manufacture. Receiver may have pitting (as seen in the picture below). See item for details.

That "special" designation is a category (or grade) all to itself (as noted above...). Here's the site I visited frequently for into back when I was researching a carbine purchase... Note the values listed for the select weapons that were posted for auction - a bit rich for me (understatement). You'll find everything listed from the various surplus milspec weapons they handle all the way to their auctions, etc. there....

CMP special = extra reconditioning and usually new barrels and wood, iirc.

Should be a great shooter. The current CMP “expert grade” is the equivalent.

I love the 03A3, too. I have two, one a Remington and the other a Smith Corona. The Smith is zeroed with conventional jacketed bullets, the Remington with cast bullets. I'm right now on a project to develop a squirrel load with that rifle.

Ever try paper patching those cast bullets?
It gets addicting.

Paper has it's own unique rewards......for one thing it really does polish the bbl.............for another you can easily drive a pp at normal '06 velocity.

Well, it was 1985.
And thus yours almost certainly has all USGI parts, including the barrel, even if it is a mixmaster.

The quality of M1 rifles purchased from the DCM in that by-gone era is quite different from what the CMP is churning out these days.
