Found out my neighbor is a "Fudd"

It must be wonderful to feel so confident that one can dispense with potential allies that irritate. I don't hunt but I've bought hunting licenses to support it and will again. You don't wise up and get together you're gonna lose this thing, all of it.

I don't care about hunting. Not one bit and never have.

But I like to shoot. A lot. So the hunting "justification" of any particular gun holds no water for me.

But when I get into a conversation with a Fudd and they ask what I'm supposed to "hunt" with an AR or a pistol, I have to explain that there's alot more to guns than just shooting bambi. Their look of quizzical shock and abhorrence that I would use a gun to shoot anyone hell bent on harming me or my family tells me they have never even considered such reality is possible.
Some of us still see guns as tools with hunting being a traditional fulfillment of gun use.

I'm all about RKBA but I don't own an AR or AK or SKS because I don't have a "use" for them, my sole purpose for my firearms are Hunting and SD.

If owning firearms is your "hobby", if paper punching and or collecting is the full extent of you gun usage good on you, I may not understand it but I'll support anyone's right to do so.

"Fudd" is a derogatory term. The guy with one hunting rifle and nothing else stands to lose his property just like the guy with a large collection if the assorted anti's get their way.
Just because a guy doesn't own a lot of firearms, owns the same stuff you do or maybe can't afford more than what he has, doesn't mean he's anti-firearm ownership.
"...I guess he's ok with..." Um, you guess? Or did he say so? Sounds like it's you who has the problem, not your neighbour.

I was at Sportsmen's Warehouse about 4 years ago looking at handguns and some cowboy was looking at bolt action rifles just down the counter from me. He looked over and said handguns were only used to kill people. I didn't bother with a response.
I might have replied . . . "Are you planning to put a telescopic sight on that SNIPER RIFLE you're looking at?"

I will agree that he has a solid 3 gun choice with the rifle, pistol and shotgun. However, his whole universe is hunting, that's the only reason he has them. That's always the center of the discussion, hunting.

I've got my guns for target shoot, fun recreation, and hopefully the need never arises...self defense.

You do realize that the AR-15 is just like any other semi-auto rifle, one trigger pull, one shot. Other than the hi-cap magazine and evil looking black stock, whats the difference between the AR and the Remington 750 semi-auto series rifles?

What's more dangereous at 500 yards....a bolt action 30-06 or the 5.56 AR. I'll wager its the 30-06.....you know....those sniper rifles.

Its just a total dichotomy of outlook on the 2nd Amendment, he's entitled to his view of it, but don't "sneer" at my black tactical rifles.

I'm just really happy my dad didn't have a problem with me buying an AR, because that would have been an issue. He see's how much I enjoy this hobby, so he was like.....go for it!:D

Yeah, but "potential allies" for WHOM?

The "Put us on the train last" crowd are still going to end up on the train, but they'll put YOU there FIRST to delay their turn.

NONE... and yet we've had somebody HERE talking as though it's some kind of "weapon of mass destruction". Sometimes I don't know if people are talking about the AR15 or the Davy Crockett.

Again, the same person was talking as though the Dreyse, Chassepot, Berdan, Lee, Mauser, Mannlicher, and Mosin-Nagant actions have been used to kill fewer people than have died in space shuttle accidents.

If somebody's never heard of the Battle of the Somme, the Mauser 98 and the SMLE... or Babi Yar, what are you going to tell them that they'll bother to listen to?

Sounds like you're making a bunch of assumptions.

a guy who owns a .308 bolt rifle, a shotgun and a 9mm pistol. That's it.

Yeah, so? Most folks don't own that many. They may have a handgun and a shotgun, but that's about it for the majority of gun owners.

He considers 3 boxes of ammo "stockpiling"......I want 1000 rounds of each caliber, minimum.

Most people consider that stockpiling because most people only have one box of ammo for what they own (unless they got a couple on sale).

He kind of sneered his nose and said "what do you need that for"?

He didn't say you shouldn't have it or no one should. He may think they're silly toys (range toys) and that "real men" shot bolt guns in a rifle caliber that put meat on the table.

I know the majority of communication comes from body language and facial expression, but he may think you're just a silly gun nut and not be an anti at all.

Exactly!

To many on both sides here see it as:

MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY!

Kinda how it is regardless of what the topic is. Prime example.....

Again, I see this as the OP being more upset because the neighbor didn't drool all over his drool on the AR. Nothing at all about the neighbor wanting them banned or that he didn't support the right of others to own one. Just that he saw no need for one. Still, it seems the moment someone makes the slightest inkling around here that they do not absolutely love what another does, they must be secretly anti-gun.

I live in a small Mid-Western town where there is probably a firearm in every household. A town where deer season is a legitimate excuse for not coming to school/work. Still probably 95% of the folks I know don't own a AR and their idea of a Hi-Cap mag is a 50 rounder for their 10/22, nor do they feel a need for anything else other than their shotgun, deer rifle and squirrel gun. Still they are intelligent enough to know that banning ARs and other forms of firearms is going to affect them and their gun-ownership. While they make roll their eyes at the new kid at the range spraying and praying, they are not going to run him off. While the may have a DU, NWTF or QDM sticker on the back window of their pick-up, they also have a NRA sticker. Calling them "Fudds" does absolutely nuttin' to help our cause.

I think Sunray sums it up the best...........

Reply: "Yup!"

And the point of owning (???) number of golf clubs, or sets of them, or rolling a big black ball down an alley at a group of innocent plastic-covered hardwood thingys is ????????????? Doesn't have much appeal to me, but if someone wants to spend their time and money doing those things they can have at it, for all it matters to me (as long as their kids have clothes to wear and food on the table.)

..... sorta pertinently parallel ..... or not .....

Some people believe in the right of everyone to do what they do.

I haven't got the slightest interest in bird hunting. That doesn't mean that I want to ban either shotguns or duck hunting.

Comments sneering at fellow gun owners I think are Fudds? Eat our own? Hell, 90% of Fudds are already in lock step with the anti's. Try as I might, patiently explaining the real 2A, progressive gun control such as GB and Australia, and why we need modern guns til I'm blue, they still openly admit to my face they would throw me under the bus to spare themselves. Makes my blood boil.

Bitter? Duh! :fire:

I have a question for the Alaskan. Is the Mini-14 more acceptable because it has a traditional wood stock and a scope on it?

Put a 30 round magazine on a Mini-14, how is that any differet from an AR?

Its hilarious that Ruger was able to get the Mini exempted from the 1994 AWB, because there's no difference between the two, lol.

He doesn't hunt with the 9mm, he never talks about shooting it. I don't know if he actually does shoot it. I'm not sure why he has it, since he's not big on recreational shooting.

Tons of folks out there with 9mms they don't hunt with and seldom shoot. They generally have it for a truck/HD gun and generally are poor shots. Don't make 'em a Fudd, just the average Joe.

My point was YOUR comment that he is only interested in hunting - since he owns a 9mm and does not hunt with it, perhaps he has some other interests regarding guns before you go whitewashing him as a FUDD because he doesn't see the issue the same as you.

My brother is very pro gun, and owns a pistol and a shotgun. That's it. Not everybody loves them the way many of us do. He has all he wants.

Not every gun owner believes we should be able to own anything, that's just the way it is.

Calling them Fudds etc is not a good way to unite, is a good way to divide, and can be very counterproductive.

Not every THR member has a lot of guns, or is hard core about owning whatever we want. Matter of fact, most gun owners only have a handful of guns, and many for hunting only.

We need to be inclusive and try to sway people to be more understanding of why an AR 15 should be legal, and why should should fight the antis tooth and nail. :)

Its different, Kill it ! It doesn't think the same, therefore its not thinking. Kill it ! Many of us act this way, and it does none of us any good.

Sweet, succinct.

Looks like a "bonding" moment lost, to me.

I found this out when I showed him my newly acquired AR-15. He kind of sneered his nose and said "what do you need that for"? Wow.....really?

I wasn't there and did not hear his tone or see his body language. What would have been his reaction be if you had said, "To have fun and maybe for self-defense . . . different strokes for different folks, right?"

So the guy failed to swoon over AR-15 and you got teed off. Now you're calling him a Fudd. Last time i checked there was no requirement that a stand up Second Amendment supporter own an AR-15 or a huge stockpile of ammo.

Personal taste in guns may change over time. There are presently 204 guns on my Excel database. Seven are AR-15 rifles. Most of those AR-15s will be sold because i've outgrown them, so to speak. Most are seldom fired.
