I have looked through some other threads, but I cannot find any real straight forward answers as to their effectiveness as a self-defense round...

what do you think?

For handgun calibers, still to be proven that they are more effective than JHP or even FMJ.

Most frangible bullets do not have adequate penetration before breaking-up. Makes big but shallow wounds, may not be deep enough to affect vital organs or cause bleed-out.

Some may fail to break-up altogether.

Costs are usually prohibitive for shooters to regularly practice with them.

picked some up today relatively cheap, just looked too interesting to me to pass up, not that I had much of a choice seeing as there wasnt much to choose from.

Bingo.

This is what they rely on. It's marketing savvy. Purely.

well, as I said, there wasn't much else to choose from.... I wasnt really losing anything by getting them, just curious what sort of affect the could have...

seems as though (at least in theory) they could be quite a good defensive round, but that is what this thread is for... determine if theory is where it ends.

I got a bunch of 9mm 62gn Magsafe ammo in a trade a while ago, along with the video tape that was distributed at the same time. I had plenty to figure POI and still have a bunch left for HD purposes.
After viewing the tape and seeing what viscious little rounds these are, and add the fact that I live in a townhouse, I use the Magsafes as HD rounds.
But, only in the house. If the gun is carried outside, then I use Corbons.

I appreciate the response CH47... seems like the aftermath could be pretty ugly... definitely not much do dig out... or a whole lot if you wanna look at it that way....

THEORETICALLY, it just seems like it could be pretty damaging...
is there any research any other actual testing to back this up?

or perhaps a link to said video or something similar?

PT1911, can you say "EXTREME PAIN"?? Since the wound area is shallow and the energy is highly dispersed the nerve endings are closer to the top of the skin layers.

Also a plus is plinking steel plates @ 25ft to 25 yards. No real worry of ricochet.

Also there have been plenty of people shot with fmj going completely through and claimed "they didn't know it".

When thinking about it... it does seem like just about one of the most excrutiating experiences I can imagine....

They won't make any difference if your firearm won't shoot 'em accurately. And like CWL says, you have to practice with whatever ammo you intend using.
"...with fmj going completely through..." That's what FMJ's are for.
"...can you say "EXTREME PAIN"??..." Extreme pain only applies if you're aware of the damage. Knew a Dieppe vet who walked off the beach with 8 holes in him. One of which was a compound leg fracture. He didn't know it until the MO on the ship asked him how he got off the beach.

surprisingly the accuracy is the one for sure thing I have heard about them... or at least... through an accurate gun... which mine is..
